"Crypto Queen" Ruja Ignatova Found Alive
Ruja Ignatova, also known as the "Cryptoqueen," is the founder and former CEO of OneCoin, a cryptocurrency that has been widely criticised as a Ponzi Scheme. Born in Bulgaria in 1978, Ignatova began her career in the financial industry, working for various companies in the field of banking and investment. In 2014, she founded OneCoin, a digital currency that promised to revolutionise the way people think about and use money.
OneCoin quickly gained traction, and within a short period, it had amassed a large following of investors and enthusiasts. The company marketed itself as a legitimate alternative to Bitcoin, with a unique and proprietary blockchain technology that could not be duplicated by any other cryptocurrency. However, as the company grew, several red flags began to emerge, and many experts in the field of cryptocurrency became suspicious of OneCoin's legitimacy.
One of the main concerns was that OneCoin had no Blockchain, meaning that it was manipulating the price of their token and it wasn't possible for anyone to independently verify the transactions that were being recorded on the network.
The company was not transparent about its operations and failed to disclose critical information such as the number of coins in circulation or the names of its development team.
The company's compensation plan was heavily criticised for being a pyramid scheme. Under this plan, investors were required to recruit new members to join the network, and in return, they would receive a commission for each new recruit. This structure encouraged members to focus more on recruiting new investors rather than promoting the value of the coin itself.
In 2016, the Bulgarian Government launched an investigation into OneCoin, and several countries such as India, Italy, Germany and the United Kingdom also warned the public about the company's activities. However, OneCoin continued to operate and expand its reach, even opening a branch office in Dubai.
In 2017, Ruja Ignatova suddenly disappeared, and her whereabouts were unknown. It was believed that she may have fled the country, possibly to evade prosecution for fraud and money laundering. Several high-ranking members of OneCoin were arrested and charged with similar crimes, and the company's operations were shut down.
The damage had been done, and it is estimated that OneCoin defrauded investors out of billions of dollars. Many people lost their life savings, and the fallout from the OneCoin scandal has had a significant impact on the reputation of the entire cryptocurrency industry.
