What do Jeff Bezos, Elon Musk, and Warren Buffett have in common?
Outside of being some of the richest people in the world, they are not traders. They do not enter and exit positions with frequency. Instead, they are long term HODLers that allowed their wealth to keep growing over decades.
This is an important point in the Internet Age. We are constantly bombarded with messages about how to trade, make millions from trading penny stocks, etc... While trading is a fantastic way to build wealth, it is one of the hardest things one will ever do. It puts one in position where he or she has to deal with oneself. Of course, few can do this. The market is one that does not submit to anyone's whims. Hence, it is up to us to adjust to what the market is telling us.
It is something that falls outside the scope of the human ego. We want to be right. We know we are smart. Thus, the market is wrong. This is a mindset that only leads to nuking one's trading account. We see this happening everyday.
The men mentioned above do not engage in such foolery. Sure, they sell different assets along the way. Buffett is a big different because he is involved in the financial arena directly so he makes decisions of asset allocation on a regular basis. Nevertheless, few of his moves are short term plays.
Here we see another key. In this age of impatience, it is hard for many to maintain a long term view. However, these people exemplify how that is vital. Bezos is more than 25 years with Amazon; Musk nearing two decades with Tesla; Buffet is 60 years with Berkshire Hathaway. Is it any wonder their entities are some of the largest in their fields?
Of course, success is required. They would not be household names if they simply were average at what they did. However, the point is more about their long-term vision and how it affected their wealth. After all, would Musk be the richest man in the world today if he sold Tesla stock after the first 10x?
Warren Buffett believes the best time to sell a company is "never". Naturally, he sold a lot of assets over the years so he does not believe in buying and holding something no matter what. Rather his view is to find those companies that you want to hold forever because their approach, management, and business model is sound. If you find that, stick to it.
We see this in the cryptocurrency world. How many people had Bitcoin for under $500 yet sold it? Even if a gain was realized, compare that to where they would be today. Certainly, there are many reasons for selling but, when viewed over the long-term, we can see how it was a failure.
Buffett is the most successful investor in history because he is not a trader. His approach is long-term all the time. He is not concerned about where things will be a year or two from now. Instead, his focus is always upon the idea of an average 20% growth per year and where things will be decades down the road.
The Bitcoin HODLers from the early days now have "life changing money". Depending upon what they have, it could be generational money. This is something to keep in mind. Are you part of something that is going to growth for a long period of time? That is where the fortunes are made. If we look at the Bloomberg Billionaire Index, we see most of the names on there came from this approach.
Compounding is a very powerful force. To achieve this, a rate of return has to be coupled with time. Traders tend to miss out on this. While they can, sometimes, ride the waves successfully, they often get caught on the wrong side of things. Those that can navigate the waters tend to be very successful.
However, more can achieve success by simply HODLing the best investments they have. This will provide an outstanding return over a long period of time. SPInvest is one such concept. The idea is not to get rich overnight but to keep building the asset base so that it growth consistently. When coupled with time, the returns will make the fund much bigger, providing more value to each token that is held.
It is a different mindset from what most carry today yet it has proven to be highly successful over the years.
