Episode 5. AI Runaway Without Brakes

Vincent, the head of Lucio Group, is leading an AI-related industry, but his co-founder Henry puts the brakes on the radical Vincent.

"AI is moving too fast. We need to go in a direction that's safe for humans, even if it means losing a little commercially." Henry said.

Henry couldn't shake the feeling that the rapid growth of AI would spell doom for humanity, and he worried that it would eventually lead to a society where humans were controlled by AI.

But Vincent disagreed. "We need to get there before the competition does. We need to be the best, and we need to upgrade quickly to keep our customers happy," Vincent says.

The compelling features of AI have people excited. Creating used to be time-consuming and painful, but with AI, it's a fraction of the time.

Henry rallied his supportive board members to put the brakes on Vincent. But the attempt was ultimately unsuccessful. Henry was ousted.

Vincent tried to build on his AI success by developing an AI chip and implanting it into the brains of disabled and paralyzed people, allowing them to live the same life as able-bodied people. The idea started out well enough.

They incorporated a brain transplant company as a subsidiary and tested it on animals. Monkeys were used as test subjects, but the monkeys implanted with the AI chip became anxious and died from side effects.

1500 monkeys died. If the monkeys didn't succeed, it would be impossible to implant the brain in humans.

Human clinical trials need to have a lot of success stories. Vincent urged the researchers to work quickly.

When South Korea's Samjung Electronics announced a smartphone with an AI chip, Vincent searched for the company that developed the AI chip.

Vincent visited South Korea some time later and came to Minho's lab.

"Minho, you've developed an AI chip, and it's amazing."

"Would you like to join the project to implant the AI chip in the brain?"

Vincent asked Minho.
But Minho declined. "Thank you for your offer, Mr. Chairman, but I have to decline. I think brain transplants are potentially harmful."

The United Nations warns against AI chip brain transplants. "This technology is widespread and potentially harmful and needs to be regulated"

UNESCO Director-General warns. "It could help solve many health problems, but it could access and manipulate the human brain," he said.

An epileptic patient had an AI chip implanted in his brain, but had to have it removed because he was having 100 seizures a day.

The FDA denied approval, saying there were many issues that needed to be addressed before human trials could begin. But Vincent falsified documents to get approval even though there were some side effects.

And he spent a lot of money to recruit the right people.

Minho's lab

An unoccupied lab after work, with two masked thieves looking for something.

One thief finds a secret safe in the back of the office and calls out to the other thief.

"Open the safe here."

The better thief puts his ear to the safe and tries to turn the dial to open it.

After a few tries, the safe door opens and he puts all the relevant documents in a bag.

He also removes the hard disk from the office computer and puts it in his bag.

The next morning, Minho arrives at work and discovers that the office has been burglarized.

Luckily, the important data was encrypted and stored in the cloud the night before.

Vincent's human clinical trial was approved by the FDA after several applications.

"The goal is to give sight to people who have lost it or enable movement to people who can't move their muscles," the company announced. People reacted with excitement. Lucio Group's stock price more than doubled in anticipation.

Minho was reminded of the past.

In South Korea, a doctor who had been predicted by the media to win a Nobel Prize for his stem cell research had fabricated a stem cell paper.

His public popularity was getting out of hand. Minho also had the illusion that stem cells could cure all diseases.

When the news announced the falsification
I thought, 'A TV program should not interfere with the research of a national talent.'
And my sympathy for him grew.

But later, when he made the bombshell statement that "stem cells don't exist," the public was shocked and devastated.

Minho felt like a runaway train without brakes when he saw the speed of AI development. However, AI-related regulatory legislation was slow to catch up.

Minho reads in the newspaper that the EU has decided to enact the first comprehensive AI regulation.

루시오 그룹의 대표 빈센트는 AI관련산업을 이끌고 있었습니다. 하지만 공동 창업자인 헨리는 급진적인 빈센트를 제동을 걸었습니다.

“너무 빠르게 AI발전하고 있습니다. 상업적으로 조금 손해를 보더라고 확실하게 인간에게 안전한 방향으로 가야합니다.” 헨리는 말했습니다. 헨리는 AI급성장으로 인류는 파멸의 길을 걷게 될 거라는 생각을 떨칠수가 없었다. 결국에는 AI에 의해 인간이 통제되는 사회가 될 것을 걱정했다.

하지만 빈센트의 생각은 달랐다. “경쟁자들이 치고 올라오기전에 우리는 목표에 도달해야 합니다. 최고가 되야 합니다. 빠르게 업그레이드해서 고객을 만족시켜야 합니다.”라고 빈센트는 말했다.

AI의 매력적인 기능들로 사람들은 열광했다. 창작하는데 많은 시간, 고통이 필요했지만 AI 로 인해 시간은 훨씬 단축되었다.

헨리는 자신을 지지하는 이사회 회원들을 규합하여 빈센트에게 제동을 걸려했다. 하지만 이런 시도는 끝내 실패하고 말았다. 그리고 헨리가 축출당했다.

빈센트는 AI 성공을 기반으로 AI칩을 개발하려고 시도했다. 그리고 장애인과 하반신이 마비된 사람들의 뇌에 AI칩을 이식하여 비장애인과 같은 생활을 할 수 있게 하고자 했다. 처음의 생각은 좋은 취지로 출발했다.

뇌이식 관련 업체를 자회사를 편입시키고 동물을 시험대상으로 삼아 시험하였다. 원숭이를 실험체로 실험하였지만 AI칩을 이식한 원숭이는 불안증세와 부작용으로 죽고 말았다. 1500마리의 원숭이가 죽어 갔다. 만약에 원숭이 실험에 성공하지 못한다면 인간에게 뇌이식을 할 수가 없다.

인간 임상실험을 위해서는 성공 사례가 많이 나와야 한다. 빈센트는 연구진들에게 조속한 연구 성과를 위해 압박했다.

빈센트는 한국의 삼정전자가 AI칩을 장착한 스마트폰을 발표하자 AI칩을 개발한 업체를 수소문했다. 빈센트는 얼마후에 한국에 방문했고 민호의 연구실로 찾아왔다.

“민호, AI칩을 개발하셨다는데 대단합니다.”

“AI칩을 뇌에 이식하는 프로젝트에 동참하실 수 있나요?”

빈센트는 민호에게 참여 제안을 했다.

하지만 민호는 거절했다. “회장님의 제안은 고맙지만 거절하겠습니다. 뇌이식은 잠재적으로 해롭다는 생각을 갖고 있습니다.”

유엔이 AI칩 뇌이식기술에 대해 경고했다. “이 기술은 광범위하고 잠재적으로 유해해 규제가 필요합니다”

유네스코 사무총장도 경고했다. “많은 건강 문제를 해결하는데 도움이 될 수 있지만 인간의 두뇌에 접근하고 조작할 수 있다.”라고 문제를 제기했다.

간질병 환자가 뇌에 AI칩을 이식했지만 하루 100번의 발작을 일으켜서 장치를 제거했다고 한다.

FDA에서는 인간실험을 시작하기 전에 해결해야 할 문제가 많다고 보고 승인을 거부했다. 하지만 빈센트는 일부 부작용이 있더라도 문서를 조작해 승인을 받도록 했다.

그리고 관련 인재들을 많은 돈을 써서 영입했다.

민호의 연구실

퇴근하고 아무도 없는 연구실, 복면을 쓴 도둑 2명 무엇인가를 찾고 있다.
도둑이 사무실안 쪽에 비밀금고를 발견하고 다른 도둑을 부른다.

“여기 금고를 열어봐”

금고를 여는데 베터랑인 도둑이 금고에 귀를 갖다대고 다이얼을 돌려 열기를 시도한다.
몇 번의 시도 끝에 금고의 문이 열리고 관련 서류를 모두 가방에 넣는다.
그리고 사무실의 컴퓨터 하드디스크를 빼서 가방에 넣는다.

다음날 아침 민호는 출근하고 도둑이 들었다는 것을 발견한다. 다행히 중요한 자료는 클라우드에 암호화 해서 저장되었다.

빈센트는 FDA 인간대상 임상실험을 승인을 여러번의 신청 끝에 받게 되었다.

“시력을 잃었으면 시력을 갖게하거나 근육을 움직이지 못하는 사람들이 움직임이 가능하게 하는 것이 목표”라고 발표했다. 사람들의 반응은 기대에 차 있었다. 루시오 그룹의 주가는 기대감으로 인해 두배이상 뛰었다.

민호는 과거의 일이 떠올랐다.

한국에서는 줄기세포연구로 언론에 의해 노벨상 수상까지 점쳐졌던 박사가 줄기세포 논문을 조작하는 사건이 있었다.
박사의 대중적인 인기가 지나치게 높아져가고 있었다. 민호도 줄기세포를 통해 모든 질병을 치유할 수 있다는 환상을 가지게 했다.

뉴스에서 논문조작을 발표했을 때
‘일개 방송이 국가적 인재의 연구를 방해하면 안된다.’라고 생각했다.
그리고 박사에 대한 동정론이 커졌다.

하지만 나중에 “줄기세포는 존재하지 않는다”는 폭탄발언에 국민들은 충격을 받았고 허탈함을 겪었다.

민호는 AI 발전속도를 볼 때 브레이크 없는 폭주 전차와 같게 느껴졌다. 하지만 각국의 AI 관련 규제 법안은 속도를 내지 못하고 있었다.

민호는 신문을 통해 EU에서 최초로 포괄적인 AI 규제를 제정하고 하기로 했다는 소식을 접한다.
