This wasn’t a move driven by spreadsheets alone. It came from a mix of hard-earned experience, opportunity-cost anxiety, and—most importantly—a hunch.
Aura: Useful, But Not Valuable (Yet)
There’s no denying that Aura is positioned as a core crafting resource. Every new consumable introduced so far requires it, and that alone makes it strategically important. But importance doesn’t always translate to value.
At the moment, I’m sitting on a growing Aura balance, and I’ve been unimpressed by what it actually unlocks in economic terms. The items that can be crafted—while useful—don’t command prices that justify aggressive production. In fact, when I looked at the ongoing costs of running those plots, it became clear that Aura production is economically unfeasible right now. The input costs outweigh the output value.
That put me at a crossroads.
Pause… or Pivot?
One option was to pause production altogether and avoid the bleed. From a narrow cost perspective, that would have been the “clean” decision.
But the idea of pausing made me cringe.
I have significant production points, valuable cards staked, and DEC committed to these plots. Letting that capacity sit idle felt like a massive opportunity cost—especially after everything I’ve learned recently about how scarce resources can become overnight.
That’s when my thinking shifted.
A Hunch About Research
Research hasn’t been exciting for a while. Ever since the Secrets of Praetoria white papers were released, Research has largely faded into the background. It lost its luster, its urgency, and its clear path to value.
But if land has taught me anything, it’s this:
resources that feel useless today can become critical tomorrow.
My recent experience with Grain is a perfect example. I once had over 170 million Grain and felt frustrated by its lack of demand. Today, Grain is one of the most painful bottlenecks in my entire land operation.
I don’t want to repeat that mistake.
So I followed my hunch: Research will matter again.
Playing the Long Game (Again)
I switched all my Magical plots back to Research knowing full well that it remains a net cost for now. This isn’t an efficiency play—it’s a positioning play.
If and when Research gains new utility—whether through crafting, progression, upgrades, or entirely new systems—I want to be ahead of the curve, not scrambling to acquire it in an inflated market.
Given how difficult and expensive resources have already become post–Land Cards, I’d rather absorb a manageable cost today than face scarcity-driven regret later.
This decision won’t show immediate returns. It might not even look “right” for a while. But Splinterlands land has repeatedly rewarded those who think in phases, not snapshots.
Aura can wait.
Research feels like it’s sleeping.
And if I’m wrong? At least I’ll know I didn’t leave valuable production idle while waiting for the next chapter of land to unfold.
