Hi all, I completed this portrait of my daughter about a month ago, roughly around the time when the school holiday started. My daughter is twelve, she celebrated her birthday on 6 October 2022 and I wrote about that in this post: Celebrating Shivon's 12th Birthday & Shopping At Mr. DIY Plus Megastore. So she will turn 13 this year and will go to secondary school (high school) next week when the new school term begins.
Like other countries in the world, the Malaysian education system is divided into four phases:
- optional playschool/preschool/kindergarten (3-6 years old)
- compulsory primary school (7-12 years old)
- compulsory secondary school (13-17 years old)
- tertiary education - college/university (18 and above)
My daughter completed her primary education last month and will continue her secondary education at a local secondary school about 5KM from home. I kind of excited and worried at the same time. How is she going to cope with the rigor of the secondary school curriculum? Will she make some good friends in the new school? A lot of her primary school friends will be there too but friendships can drift apart. I guess these are common concerns of parents when their kids reach a certain milestone in their life. I am sure my daughter will be just fine. However, being an Asian parent I can't help but plan ahead to make sure she can cope with her studies. I enrolled her in extra tuition classes for 3 different core subjects - Malay Language (essay and comprehension), Mathematics, and History. This is a common practice in Malaysia and as far as I know in other Asian countries as well. The extra classes are only 4 hours weekly, one hour for each lesson. So it is not too burdensome and she still has plenty of time for homework, extracurricular activities, and leisure stuff.
❤️ The Portrait ❤️
Anyway, enough about school stuff, let's focus on this portrait. I sketched this portrait as a gift for her after completing her primary education.
And here is the reference photo.
Materials I used:
- 165gsm acid-free paper
- Mars Lumograph Black pencils
- Derwent Graphic pencils
- Black marker
- Black pen
- Black and silver color pencils
- Sakura White Gelly Roll pen
And the progress photos:
And the completed portrait. I don't have an A3 size scanner so I had to capture this using my handphone, and that is why the picture is quite dark and not too clear.
I framed it up in a nice white frame and here she is with her gift 😍
I even made a short video of myself working on this drawing.
That's it for now. If you read this far, thank you. I appreciate it so much! Kindly give me a follow if you like my content. I mostly write about making art, life musing, and our mundane yet charming family life here in Klang Valley, Malaysia.
Note: All images used belong to me unless stated otherwise.
