The Offer
“Are you free later tonight?”, the text message read.
It was from one of my mates; Shannon.
“Yeah”, I replied, texting back.
“I’m thinking of going down to the Beach Hotel in Seaford Park for dinner. Do you want to come along?”, Shannon asked.
“Sounds cool to me, just give me 30 minutes.” I replied again.
The Drive
30 minutes later I was showered, changed and getting into Shannon’s work van.
He’s currently without a car having just sold his previous one.
We went back to Shannon’s place where he had to finish up some laundry and do some stuff around the house. I placed a booking for 7:30pm that night. Apparently you have to boom in advance because they can get very busy.
The drive itself took nearly an hour and a half from where Shannon lives, and we used the opportunity to catch up on our respective lives. His divorce and custody issues, and various other things. I talked about all of the nonsense I’ve had to endure in the last month or so.
The Arrival
Upon arrival, we saw this magnificent building, possibly best seen during the day as the moon was already high in the sky, and we set about looking for a parking spot in the already fairly full carpark. Shannon was initially worried that we’d have to wait a long time to get in because there was a line of people already formed. I pointed out that it was out the front of the pub section, not the restaurant section and we went inside.
When we entered I noticed the obligatory gambling den, AKA “Pokies Room” to the left and on my right
there were several clocks on the wall depicting times around the world. What I found humorous was the one in the middle said “The Beach”.
The Meals
We were greeted by a staff member who confirmed our booking, and then escorted us to table 47, right near the fireplace. There was already cutlery, a glass and a water bottle already there, but we were offered drinks and menus. The prices were reasonable for a restaurant of this type.
You might think that a place like this would have had a stricter dress code but there were people either straight from work, or they were there as part of a work function (trades people, I guess from the colourful language) or ladies dressed to the nines because it was their Saturday night out.
I didn’t feel out of place even though I was dressed casually.
Shannon suggested splitting cheesy garlic bread for an entree each and I suggested the prawn and pork dumplings to round it out a little. We both ordered the beef schnitzel with mushroom sauce.
It wasn’t long before our drinks and entrees were brought to us.
When we were finished, Shannon wanted to go to a nearby skatepark and test out the new bearings on his skateboard. This left me rather bored, but gave an opportunity to mess around with my iPad.
I found out later it got down to 9 degrees Celsius. My hands started to turn purple.
I wonder if that’s just an Australian thing, and people in colder climates aren’t affected until much lower temperatures? Something to Google for next time.
Afterwards we found somewhere to park in the city on the way back and headed into the
Bakery On O’Connell (street) for dessert. Don’t tell my dietitian!
Thank you for reading this entry.
Until next time, see you in the kitchen!
