Last night's pasta was served with a whats-in-the-fridge-that-works-well-together ragout. Also known as one of Fiona's made-up dishes. It included balsamic onion marmalade, 2 carrots, grated, half a brinjal and half a yellow pepper, both chopped. Add three cloves of garlic and the remains of some mushroom paté, the jar swished out with white wine. Last but not least, a left over lamb chop that also added a smokey flavour (it had been braaied).
The final touches was a liberal sprinkling of chopped, fresh oreganum from the garden and grated Boernkaas (18 month mature gouda) from Montagu cheese.
The antipasti was a beetroot salad with feta and rocket. The rocket has its own story.
When one selects herbs with a sell-buy date that is three days away, this is not what one expects when one opens the punnet. Nor is this the result of a 30 minute drive home from Robertson to McGregor in a cool bag.
It should have been ample with some left over for another meal. After picking out the yellow and limp, shriveled leaves, there was barely enough for what I was making. Thankfully, it was just us and I was not entertaining.
Not sure when this stock would have been dispatched, but is should not have been on the shelf at Robertson Super Spar.
Where we live, it's impossible to pop into the car and return products at 7pm the day of purchase: that is an hour's round trip.
Anyhow, I am grateful that I was able to rescue some.
Until next time, be well
Fiona
