Strictly speaking, this blog post is not about a time capsule. However, I recently came across some books that belonged to me as a child. Mrshill artistically arranged them for this flat-lay photo. My parents got tired of them taking up space at their place. I don’t think they have seen the light of day for at least a decade (but closer to two). We have two extra bedrooms in Orange now so I can hardly say we don’t have room for them! A few of them were hand-me-downs from my parents’ or older siblings’ childhoods. These aren’t all the books I had as a child - some were handed down to my nephew and/or niece and I’m not sure what happened to the rest.
I was really into ‘Australiana’ books as a kid - my parents encouraged this of course! Personal favourites were: Snugglepot and Cuddlepie (I am pretty sure that I gave my all-in-one complete set of S&G stories to my niece but I do have others left over, as well as a few of the S&G spinoffs like Nuttybub and Nittersing and Chucklebud and Wunkydoo); Blinky Bill; and Ginger Meggs. I don’t think kids these days are into these kinds of books anymore, which is a shame. Maybe they aren’t PC enough for the 21st century?
It is an absolute joy to have these books back in my life again. If we and when we have a child lots of these will be read to them.
Part 2 deserves its own post - my childhood stamp collection which came along with these books. That’s a whole other rabbit hole I’ve been down for the last two Sundays.
