These Days: Food, Nature, and Murals
I don’t have a specific theme for today, but I just wanted to share some recent photos and little stories from these days.
This huge pizza was my husband’s request from a pizza shop in town. We used to order pizza from this shop when it had a different owner and when we still lived in town. However, after we moved out of town, we gradually stopped ordering from there. Instead, we started making our own pizza using frozen crusts, which we sometimes customize ourselves. It had been quite a while since we last ordered pizza from a pizza shop. I’d say a few years.
The new owner was very friendly and polite, just like the previous owner. The sauce tasted a little different from before, but it was still really good. I especially liked the aroma of the herbs. Of course, we couldn’t eat the whole pizza at once, but we enjoyed the leftovers the next day as well. The pepperoni was fresh and delicious.
Almost every country has its own version of pizza-style food, just like Japan does. In Japan, we have okonomiyaki, originally from the Kansai region, and hirayachi, an Okinawan-style pancake.
I also found a new mural in town. It is so beautiful and detailed. The artwork includes many local elements: apples, grapevines, cliffs and the ocean, a tribal logo, cornfields and valleys, cows, and chickens. Everything is packed into it.
The shadows of the trees cast on the mural looked beautiful as well. There are lights installed above the wall, so I imagine it will look lovely at night too.
And suddenly, back to food again. I made a side dish using daikon radish and carrots called kiriboshi daikon (dried shredded daikon). I really love daikon radish, but I can’t always find it at the store. Recently, my husband found daikon radish seeds at a local hardware store.
So this spring, we can grow our own daikon radishes! Yay! Hopefully, we’ll be able to grow healthy ones.
By the way, last autumn we had a blue jay we called “Bluejay-kun” visiting our property until he eventually moved on. I miss him very much. Now, we have a woodpecker family in our yard. We also have a squirrel who visits us constantly. He is very cute and surprisingly friendly. I haven’t given him a name yet, but I guess I simply call him “Squirrel-kun.”
I don’t want to give wild animals human names because it makes saying goodbye harder when they eventually leave to continue their own lives. Still, I really enjoy seeing Squirrel-kun this spring.

最近のこと:食べ物や自然、壁画
今日は特にテーマはないのですが、最近の写真やちょっとした出来事を書きたいと思います。
この大きなピザは、夫のリクエストで町のピザ屋さんにオーダーしたものです。私たちがまだ町に住んでいた頃は、別のオーナーさんの時代からよく注文していました。しかし、引っ越してからはだんだんその店から遠ざかり、最近は冷凍ピザ生地を使って自分たちでピザを作ることが多くなり、時々アレンジも加えて食べています。お店のピザを注文するのは久しぶりで、実に数年ぶりだと思います。
新しいオーナーさんは以前の方と同じように、とても親切で礼儀正しい方でした。ソースの味は前とは少し違いましたが、これもとても美味しかったです。特にハーブの香りが気に入りました。もちろん一度には食べきれなかったので、翌日も残りもののピザを美味しくいただきました。ペパロニも新鮮でとても美味しかったです。
ピザのような料理は、ほとんどの国にそれぞれありますよね。日本でいうと、関西発祥のお好み焼きや、沖縄のヒラヤーチーなどがあります。
町で新しい壁画も見かけました。とても美しくてディテールが繊細な作品です。リンゴやブドウのつる、崖と海、トライブロゴ、トウモロコシ畑や谷、牛や鶏など、地域の要素がたくさん描かれていました。
木の影が壁画に映っている様子もとてもきれいでした。上には照明もついていたので、夜はまた違った雰囲気でライトアップされるのだと思います。
そして、また食べ物の話ですが、私は切り干し大根と人参のおかずを作りました。大根はとても好きなのですが、いつもお店で手に入るとは限りません。そんな中、夫が地元のホームセンターで大根の種を見つけてくれました。
今年の春は、自分たちで大根を育てることができそうです。楽しみです。元気に育ってくれるといいなと思います。
ところで、去年の秋まで、庭にはブルージェイが来ていて、ブルージェイくんと呼んでいましたが、ある日を境に旅立ったため来なくなってしまいました。とても寂しいですが、今は代わりにキツツキの家族が庭に来ています。
それから、いつも遊びに来るリスもいます。とてもかわいくて、意外と人懐っこいです。まだ名前はつけていませんが、単純に「リスくん」と呼んでいます。
野生の動物に人の名前をつけると、いなくなったときに別れがつらくなるので、あえて人間らしい名前はつけないようにしています。それでも、この春もリスくんに会えるのを楽しみにしています。
