Wow! If I saw that my bus is canceled, I would probably freak out and complain at the bus company desk until they do the refund and find another solution... It is outrageous what they have done! On the other side, you did it well as you kept it calm and found another solution to get to your destination!

And regarding border crossings, it's amazing how things change so rapidly, only after a few meters in the "other country"... I had the same feeling so many times, and one of the most obvious is French-Italian border crossing where a tunnel divides two countries... You enter the tunnel in one country, and go out in another... hehehehe
