A portion of comfort food for menstruating women, with a warm, creamy, and savory taste.
Being a woman is truly complicated with all its beauty and other painful sides. Yeep, being a woman hurts and bleeding every month. It never gets easy. But women are great and can get through it all with all the moods that attack them.
Sometimes menstruation comes out smoothly, sometimes it is accompanied by menstrual cramps which make the body, especially the stomach, uncomfortable. In Indonesia, we have herbal drinks to treat menstrual cramps. Turmeric drink.
So far, turmeric has been effective in curing my menstrual cramps. That will make me comfortable. So, from this drink to cure menstrual cramps, I was inspired to make food with turmeric gravy.
When menstruation comes, I often don't have the appetite to eat heavy food. So, my helper is flat noodles/rice flour noodles/kwetiau. I will combine these flat noodles with turmeric, also coconut milk.
I use coconut milk to make the gravy taste delicious. If it's just turmeric, the gravy will be bitter. Actually, this dish will taste similar to gravy curry but is lighter because it doesn't use a lot of spices. Just use bay leaves and cinnamon.
For this recipe, I used one segment of turmeric which was then finely ground. But to be more practical, you can use 1 teaspoon of ground turmeric.
For green vegetables, I use pak choy. You can use spinach, cabbage, or even broccoli. In my refrigerator, there is still a supply of super fresh pak choy. So, this is the right choice for serving flat noodles with pakcoy.
THE INGREDIENTS
- 250 grams of flat noodles (rice flour noodles / kwetiau), or you can use other types of noodles to suit your taste
- green vegetables, you can use mustard greens or bok choy
- 1 turmeric segment, ground, or can be blended with garlic and shallots. To be more practical, you can use 1 teaspoon of turmeric powder.
- 1/2 onion bulb in small size, thinly sliced
- 5 small cloves of shallots, thinly sliced
- 500 ml of liquid coconut milk
- 2 bay leaves
- 3-5 cm cinnamon stick
- enough celery, finely chopped
- a teaspoon of salt
- a pinch of sugar
COOKING INSTRUCTIONS
STEP 1
soak rice flour noodles first to avoid uncomfortable bad smells. usually, the seller adds some ingredients to keep noodles last long.
STEP 2
Heat about two tablespoons of vegetable oil. Use healthier olive oil. Add all the onions and spices except salt. Continuously stirring, cook over low heat until fragrant.
STEP 3
Add green vegetables and cook until vegetables are half cooked about 5 minutes. Add a little water to prevent the bottom of the vegetables from burning.
STEP 4
Add noodles, with salt, sugar, and chopped celery. Stir-fry for a while. We need hand movements to stir quickly so that the noodles don't burn.
STEP 5
Add coconut milk. Stir well, and cook them until simmer. Don't bring them to a boil. So, make sure you use ready-to-drink coconut milk. Usually, I will make the coconut milk thinner by adding ready-to-drink water. That will make the gravy safe to consume. Remove and serve while warm.
AIR FRYER TEMPEH
For this serving, I also served air fryer tempeh. You can also fry tempeh if you don't have an air fryer. Before putting the tempeh into the air fryer, I dipped the tempeh in seasoning water.
Seasoning water ingredients for 150-200 grams of tempeh:
- 1 teaspoon coriander powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 cup of water
Dip slices of tempeh into seasoning water for a few moments. Then arrange it in the air fryer basket.
Cook for about 10 minutes per side. You can spray oil for an extra crispy texture.
THE RESULTS
I didn't even expect that the result would be so simply earthy. It's warm and makes me comfortable. This meal is definitely my favorite for menstrual day.
Usually, I only rely on coconut milk for comfort soup food, but this one is healthier and adds more color. I fell in love with this menu.
