Did you know that there is one popular food that is currently a favorite in Indonesian society? As you know, Indonesia was colonized by the Dutch for 350 years, creating a lot of culture, food and customs that influenced the lives of Indonesians at that time. One of them is introducing some Dutch food, namely PASTEL. Yes, this food is one of the various foods that until now has become a popular food among Indonesian people.
Pastel entered Indonesia through Dutch women who were very fond of pastels. Teach domestic workers to cook pastels so that more and more workers understand and adopt these foods for later distribution. In the past, this food could only be enjoyed by the upper class.
But now, in this modern era, pastel has become a food that can be enjoyed by anyone, regardless of economic status. This change in food adaptation is also very pronounced, adapted to the Indonesian taste which is rich in spices, from local Indonesian spices, so that this food becomes a very useful heritage, especially in the variety of Indonesian food.
Pastels are one of my husband's favorite types of fried foods. This food has a very distinctive taste. Moreover, pastel is a food that is easy to find anywhere. I really like making pastels, it's so easy to make, I also really like storing pastels as frozen food snacks, so practical, when made in large quantities, as long as you store them properly, the pastels will last a long time in the refrigerator.
Likewise today, I haven't made pastels for a long time, I plan to make quite a lot of pastels as a snack stock at home. Healthy snacks must always be at home, so that we can still eat well without having to suffer. This time, I want to make pastels with plant-based ingredients, all food ingredients without any animal elements, but they taste very good, easy to process.
Vegetable Pastel
To make vegetable pastels is so easy, it's just that you need some ingredients to make it. You can add any vegetables you like, whatever filling is fine, but this time I made pastels which are often consumed by Indonesian people to make them more authentic. Adjust to your needs, don't forget to follow the steps gradually so you don't fail in making it. The following ingredients are needed:
Ingredients;
- 500 gr wheat flour
- 100 ml of water
- 150 gr margarine (plant based, made from palm oil)
- 300 gr potatoes
- 100 gr carrots
- 2 pcs spring onions
- 2 pcs celery
- 6 cloves of red onion
- 5 cloves of garlic
- Bay leaves and lime leaves
- 6 pcs red chili (adjust to taste)
- Pepper and coriander powder
- Sugar and salt for seasoning (adjust to taste)
- Sauce tomato and mayonise vegan
How to make vegetable pastels;
- Peel the potatoes and carrots, wash thoroughly with running water. Boil with 1 liter of water for 15-20 minutes, cook until half cooked, do not boil too long because it will affect the shape of the pastel filling. Drain when done, then cut into cubes.
- Puree the ingredients; red pepper, onion and garlic. Saute with 1 tsp vegetable oil, cook until fragrant.
- Enter the pepper and coriander powder, then stir until the powder is evenly mixed, then pour all the diced potatoes and carrots.
- Enter the celery leaves and spring onions, add salt, sugar and 150 ml of water, stir until well mixed and cook until the water dries up.
- The pastel filling can be left to cool and can be used.
- Make pastel skins; Weigh flour, use medium protein flour. Add all ingredients; flour, margarine and 100 ml of water, mix well and become a dough. Weigh 40 g of dough and flatten. After that, put it in the pastel mold.
- Fill the pastel skin with the filling that has been made, making sure nothing is broken.
- Heat the oil, fry the pastels on medium heat. Fry gently, then drain the oil.
- Vegetable paste is ready to be served.
