( EN / DE ) The last view weeks I have realized several times that many people on our planet are not familiar with the concept and background of the Advent Wreath and counting the sundays before Christmas. Therefore, today I would like to tell about this very nice Tradtition:
It is said that a pastor in northern Germany in the 19th century had a wagon wheel hung in the church with 24 candles. He did this so that the children of an orphanage would know how many days they had to wait until Christmas. This first "wreath" had small red candles for each day and four large white candle for each of the Sundays.
By time, this wheel was decorated with fir branches and the candles for the days disappeared. What remained was a wreath with four candles, one for each Sunday before Christmas.
From northern Germany, this idea of a wreath with the four candles spread relatively quickly throughout Germany to Austria and some regions of Hungary. In the 1920 / 30s this beautiful custom became very widespread, especially through schools and also the flower trade a new tradition entered people's living rooms.
After the Second World War, every German-speaking person knew the Advent wreath. Personally, I find it's interesting how quickly a custom can develop, bearing in mind that there was no worldwide networking back then.
I think this was only possible within this short time of roundabout 40 years because it is a beautiful custom that almost every non-believing person also appreciates very much.

While Advent was a holy month in the Middle Ages and had a very long tradition as a Christian fasting period before Christmas, the tradition of the Advent wreath is relatively young.
The original fasting idea of Advent time is now completely forgotten, but rather turned into the opposite, a time of gluttony, pleasure and consumption.
But this beautiful simple tradition of lighting a candle together with loved ones in this dark season has remained. Sitting down at a table with your family on a Sunday evening and just taking time for each other is simply beautiful.
While I was preparing this blog article the idea came to me to show you all how diverse Advent wreaths can look! And so I asked a few people in the German community if I can show their posted wreaths here. Below are a few very nice ideas, how an Advent Wreath can look like:

In den letzten Wochen habe ich mehrfach gesehen, dass sehr vielen Menschen unserer Erde der Begriff und die Hintergründe des Adventkranzes und das Zählen der Sonntage vor Weihnachten nicht bekannt ist. Daher möchte ich heute gerne von dieser sehr schönen Tradition berichten:
Es wird erzählt, dass ein Pfarrer in Norddeutschland im 19. Jahrhundert ein Wagenrad in die Kirche hängen ließ mit 24 Kerzen. Er tat dies, damit die Kinder eines Waisenhauses wussten, wie viele Tage sie noch bis zum Weihnachtsfest warten mussten. Dieser erste "Kranz" hatte kleine rote Kerzen für jeden Tag und vier große weiße Kerze für die Sonntage.
Mit der Zeit wurde dieses Rad mit Tannenreisig geschmückt und die Kerzen für die Tage verschwanden. Zurück blieb ein Kranz mit vier Kerzen, für jeden Sonntag vor Weihnachten eine Kerze.
Von Norddeutschland aus verbreitete sich diese Idee eines Kranzes mit den vier Kerzen relativ schnell über ganz Deutschland bis nach Österreich und in manche Regionen Ungarns. In den 1920 / 30er Jahren wurde dieser schöne Brauch sehr stark verbreitet, vor allem über Schulen und auch den Blumenhandel hielt eine neue Tradition Einzug in die Wohnzimmer der Menschen.
Nach dem zweiten Weltkrieg kannte jeder deutschsprachige Mensch den Adventkranz. Ich persönlich finde es interessant, wie schnell sich ein Brauchtum entwickeln kann, man bedenke, dass es damals noch keine weltweite Vernetzung gab.
Ich glaube, diese schnelle Verbreitung innerhalb von ca 40 Jahren war nur deshalb möglich, weil es ein wunderschöner Brauch ist, den auch fast jeder nicht gläubige Mensch sehr schätzt.
Während der Advent im Mittelalter ein heiliger Monat war und als christliche Fastenzeit vor Weihnachten eine sehr lange Tradition hatte, ist die Tradtition des Adventkranzes also noch relativ jung.
Der ursprüngliche Fastengedanke der Advent Zeit ist mittlerweile völlig in Vergessenheit geraten ist, sondern eher ins Gegenteil, in eine Zeit der Völlerei, des Genusses und Konsums umgeschlagen.
Aber die schöne Tradition, sich mit seiner Familie in dieser dunklen Jahreszeit gemeinsam eine Kerze zu entzünden ist erhalten geblieben. Sich Sonntags mit seinen Lieben gemeinsam an einen Tisch zu setzten und ein wenig Zeit füreinander zu nehmen ist eben einfach schön
Als ich diesen Blog Artikel vorbereitet habe kam mir die Idee, allen zu zeigen, wie vielfältig Advent Kränze aussehen können! Und so habe ich in der Deutschen Community ein paar Leute gefragt, ob ich ihre geposteten Kränze hier zeigen darf.
