I'm a sucker for desserts and cakes and yesterday I noticed a jam roly poly product on the supermarket shelves. Aunt Bessie is English brand that produces various ready made meals sold in supermarkets, and jam roly poly is one of my favourite desserts. Jam roly poly is a classic English pudding, like a swiss roll but the sponge is a bit more chewy as it includes suet. That's the bit of fat around beef or lamb kidneys. The pudding is steamed instead of baked, and you eat it with loads of custard poured on top. Yummy!!
Then I took a closer look at the product. It's actually a beer!!! Now that's interesting. It's a collaboration between Aunt Bessie, and Northern Monk, a UK craft beer producer. The can says its produced with plum, apricot, strawberry and custard. Jam roly poly is spread with jam and rolled up, so the fruit probably represents the jam flavour, and custard, of course is poured on top when you eat it. These four flavours make up the flavour of the beer as can be seen from the ingredients.
I don't know how long this product has been around, as it's the first time I've seen it in the supermarkets. It cost £6 for 4 cans, which to be honest isn't expensive . I was pondering whether to try it, but since hubby is not a big fan of sweet stuff, and I normally only take a few sips from his drink, I was worried that it might go to waste if I didn't like it. The thought of drinking a sweet custard flavour beer didn't go down too well with me. It just sound odd. I mean liking the dessert is one thing, but to drink it as a beer just felt weird. Plus the product packaging didn't look right. I mean when you buy a can of beer, you want to buy a can of beer, not a plate of food, if you know what I mean.
So sorry guys, I can't do the normal beer review and show you the colour, the head, the taste etc. Just wondering, would you try this if you saw it in the supermarkets? Let me know.
