One of the benefits of having a little garden at school is to easily harvest the produce, cook up a storm, and satisfy our hungry tummies. The vegetable soup has become our favorite ever since our garden has grown into a lushier and greener corner. As we savor the soup together with my students on top of our laughter and shared moments, I noticed that the flavor or any food we share becomes even better and savorier. One simple meal always gives us happiness in every bite!
Thanks to the government program that aims to improve the nutritional status of the students. Every school is encouraged to have a garden and organize feedings using our garden’s produce. Truth be told, even without this initiative, I’d still have spontaneous feedings for my students for the reason that not everyone can bring their food with them, and it makes me happy to share a dish with them once in a while. And the presence of our garden just makes everything cost-free and yes clean and healthy!
For this year, I opt to plant leafy vegetables on our garden. These leafy vegetables thrive in our hot weather well and don’t require watering every day. They are low maintenance and they easily multiply and grow. And so, this day when I observed that our Kangkong was getting abundant I suggested an “eat together” to enjoy the fruits of our labor.
🍃Green Green Garden
So together with my students, we joyfully surveyed the garden and checked the Kangkong and alugbati ready for harvest. My students who assisted me delightfully harvested almost everything, they even playfully suggested that we would harvest the leafy veggies of another class garden too. Haha! We asked permission from another teacher and we’re happy that our wish was granted.
We harvested the leafy vegetables from two gardens, and I knew that still the harvest wouldn’t suffice the hungry stomachs of my 35 students whom majority of whom were men. I was a little concerned, yet I was reminded of my mother’s wise words that no matter how small the quantity of the food is, everyone could still eat and enjoy it if it's shared!
We filled one plastic bag of Kangkong and Alugbati leaves and now it’s time to get cooking!
🍃It's Cooking Time!
To enhance the flavor, I asked my student to buy ½ kilo of meat, food seasoning and spices. The boys then hurriedly made the fire while the girls were busy slicing and preparing the ingredients for the dish to be made.
We made the fire at the back of our classroom. Luckily firewoods were available in the surroundings making it easy to gather.
Fortunately, I also had a group of students in my class who are good at cooking and willingly volunteered to prepare the meal.
After almost 20 minutes, the enticing aroma of the Ginisang Kangkong had enveloped our classroom making us even hungrier! We paired our dish with spice Hipon or Shrimp!
When the food was ready, we eagerly shared the food together! And guess what! We were all craving for more! It was just like we only tasted one spoonful, it seemed the food vanished down our throats! Haha!
Nonetheless, we enjoyed our meal and the moments we shared again over this simple delicious and nutritious meal!
💚Takeaway💚
The produce from our little garden can save the day and can make our tummy happy. And no matter how simple the meal is, once it is shared it becomes one of the best meals at the moment. Lastly, with our little garden, we get to enjoy our clean and nutritious meals, all for free.
Because when the tummy is full, the mind works well!
