Hello everyone and welcome to Warhammer 40k and here I review another Detachment Review for the Space Marines Army, this time: The Spearpoint Task Force, which is the Whitescars specific Detachment as an upgrade to the Stormlance Task Force
As explained in the post The Future of Warhammer 40k Datasheet Reviews on Hive - Faction Pack orientated we are now going to be doing reviews based on the new Faction Packs.
This post is based on Faction Pack Space Marines that have more Detachments than Codex Space Marines and it replaces everything that happened prior. There are small changes and these changes are based on what can be found online at www.warhammer-community.com.
Since I started, the Space Marines have received even MORE Detachments, putting me back from getting to any other factions. So I need to get my ass in gear and get more of these done at a faster pace.
On with the Review!
Note that this Detachment makes use of the Space Marine Army Rule, Oath of Moment.
Spearpoint Task Force
Detachment Rule - Stormswift Onslaught
Adeptus Astartes unit from your army are eligible to declare a Charge in the turn in which they Advanced or Fell Back.
Wrath of the First Khan
At the end of the Fight phase, when a Suboden Khan unit has destroyed an enemy unit and is no loner in engagement range of an enemy, that unit can make a Normal move of up to 6".
Restriction
Your army can include White Scars units but cannot include any Adeptus Astartes units drawn from any other Chapter.
Review So the same Army-wide bonus and an extra rule that only affects the White Scars-only character's unit.
Enhancements
Most Detachments have 4 Enhancements. These can only be given to Characters that qualify and never to Epic Heroes. You may only select up to three Enhancements to field at the same time. The Points indicated next to these Enhancements are stated as they are at the time of writing this article. They may change in the latest Minutorum Field Manual.
Spearpoint Paragon - 25pts (Fury of the Storm)
Adeptus Astartes Mounted model only. Increase Strength and Armor Penetration of the Bearer's melee weapons by 1 and Increase by 2 when the bearer ends a Charge move.
Review There is only a Chaplain on Bike that can take this in Codex Space Marines. Crozium at S6 AP-1 becomes S7, AP-2 and on the charge S8 and AP-3 on the Charge. This is Powerfist strength and AP that makes him able cut into monsters and tanks!
Chogorian Hunmaster - 25pts (Hunter's Instincts)
Adeptus Astartes mounted model only. While the bearer's unit is in Strategic Reserves, they are at one battle round higher than it actually is.
Review This means they can arrive in No-man's land in Battle Round 1 and in Battle Round 2, come from behind the enemy!
Hunter's Eye - 20pts
Adeptus Astartes model only. Ranged Weapons equipped by models in the bearer's unit have the Sustained Hits 1 and Ignores Cover abilities
** Review** This is the only Enhancement that is different between Spearpoint and Stormlance. it is more expensive and better than the other one.
Stormseer's of Wisdom - 15pts (Portents of Wisdom)
Adeptus Astartes model only. While the bearer is leading a unit, you can re-roll Advance rolls made for that unit.
Stratagems
Armour of Contempt - 1 CP
When: Your opponent's Shoot or Fight phase, after an enemy has selected its targets.
Target: One Adeptus Astartes unit from your army that was selected by one or more of those attacks.
Effect: Until the attacking unit has finished making its attacks, each attack they make is at -1 Armour Penetration Characteristic.
Review Note that most Space Marine Detachments have this Stratagem as one of their 6 Stratagems; it is not an error that they and the Gladius have Armour of Contempt.
Evasive Manoeuvres - 1 CP (Ride Hard, Ride Fast)
When: Your Opponent's Shooting Phase after a unit has selected targets.
Target: One Adeptus Astartes Mounted unit or Adeptus Astartes Fly Vehicle that was selected as a target of those attacks.
Effect: Until the end of the phase, each time an attack targets your unit, subtract 1 to Hit and 1 to Wound roll
Review This can make a unit very tough to put down!
Mobilte Lethality - 1CP
When: Your Movement Phase
Target: One Adeptus Astartes unit from your army.
Effect: Until the end of the turn, that unit is eligible to Fall Back or Advance and shoot.
Hunter's Instincts - 1CP (Wind-swift Evasion)
When: Your opponent's Movement phase, just after an enemy unit ends a Normal, Advance or Fall Back Move.
Target: One Adeptus Astartes Infantry unit or Adeptus Astartes Mounted unit that is within 9" of that enemy unit.
Effect: Your unit can move up to 6"
Restrictions: Cannot be used to target an infantry unit that is in Engagement range of the enemy.
Withdraw and Regroup - 1CP
When: End of your opponent's Fight Phase
Target: One Adeptus Astartes Mounted unit or Adeptus Astartes Fly Vehicle that is not in Engagement Range of an enemy unit.
Effect: Remove the unit from the battlefield and place them into Strategic Reserves.
Spear Thrust and Sabre Swing - 1 CP
When: Fight Phase
Target: One Adeptus Astartes unit that has not been selected to fight this phase.
Effect: Select either Lance or Lethal Hits ability. Until the end of the phase, melee weapons in the unit have that ability. If the unit is a Mounted unit, they have both abilities.
Review Lance gives you a +1 to Wound in the turn that you charge.
Review
In a nutshell: There are three Strats that are different between the Spearpoint and the Stormlance and 3 that are the same.
Stormlance can: 1: Get Assault on ranged weapons or give Assault weapons Sustained Hits 1; 2: Auto Advance 6" or 9" for Mounted units; 3: Re-roll Charges and gain Lance.
The Spearpoint instead gets 1: A Mounted unit of Fly unit goes back into Reserves; 2: An Astartes unit gains Lance or Lethal Hits, Mounted units can get both; 3: An Astartes unit can Fall Back or Advance and Shoot.
This makes the two... akin to each other but different and different tactics. I wish there was a more combat focussed Space Marines Mounted unit though! Bring back Veterans on Bikes or Command Squad on Bikes!
Next, Enhancements.
Mostly the same Enhancements as Stormlance, Hunter's Eye is great for tha shooting bike unit led by a Chaplain but can be used on anything shooty.
Thank you for reading this review!
