Since last post in this series of house renovation posts a lot has happened again. As the title suggests I took care of the kitchen and bathroom some more. While both aren't finished 100%, they do get closer and closer to finishing!
Let's Start With The Kitchen!
As mentioned in some of the previous posts, I got myself a kitchen from the Ikea. It's a basic design with two counter tops and all the basic equipement you need in a kitchen. The biggest upgrades from the kitchen in my previous place is having a dishwasher and proper freezer. I'm excited to not have to deal with dishes anymore!
So the kitchen design was made by me and someone from Ikea checked and ordered all the parts for me. They got delivered into my house as a big pile of boxes. All good. Now my challenge, the assembly. Let's see if we can turn this pile of boxes into a kitchen:
End goal is something that looks like this:
Bare in mind thought that the counter tops in this rendering are different than what will be placed eventually. I still need to oder the final countertops while having a temporary top placed.
First step in the assembly is a big cabinet for the fridge/freezer and placing the mounting rails for the top cabinets. I didn't take the best pictures of this first step, but here's the rough idea where you can see the cabinet on the left and the mounting rail attached to the walls: The electric sockets in the bottom are for light switches and plugs. The top socket will be used for the under-cabinet lighting.
With the mounting rails attached we could setup a little assembly line of the over and underhead cabinets. These are all standard Ikea and once you have done a few, it becomes brainless work. Here's the intermediate result where some cabinets and the dishwasher are placed:
Notice that we also cut the temporary countertop to size and placed it. Only thing to be added is a hole for the sink. Next step before placing all the doors and drawers is the kitchen island. Same as before, assembling the cabinets and placing them. For the island, a few floor brackets were place to attach them firmly to the floor, a requirement by Ikea. Here's an intermediate step, don't mind all the mess (or the empty beer bottle :P). In this picture the induction stove top got installed too! I'm excited to test this out with some nice recipes!
After all the cabinets were in place, the door and drawer panels were installed and everything tidied up. Apart from the final counter top with the bar end, the back panels for the island and the under skirting needs to be placed still. Nevertheless the kitchen is usable at this point and I'm pretty happy with this intermediate result. Here's the current state:
Bathroom Updates
Now that we can cook again the bathroom is priority. A shower once in a while would be nice :)
Since last time we've installed a temporary countertop to place the sink. Due to limited space we decided to place this countertop such that the washer/dryer could be placed underneath. Here's the current state of this setup:
With this update the bathroom is useable. But of course this is not the final state at all! I'm now looking for a nice piece of wood to make the final countertop. The washer/dryer will eventually be placed behind some doors, a nice big mirror need to be placed, and on the left side we would like to place some nice wooden shelves. Still, I'm pretty happy with the current situation.
In addition to the sink we had the heater repairman coming over to help install a new radiator in the bathroom. A basic design to hang the towels from:
We also placed a temporary shower curtain. Eventually this will be replaced by a nice glass door. But we still need to find a nice one we like:
A Liveable Situation Finally
I'm pretty happy with all these updates. It is still all in sort of a temporary state and a lot more finishing touches are needed to fully call it done. But at this point the place is liveable. In fact, we have moved in officially a little while back. It slowly is becoming our home for real now!
I hope you like the progress we made and the renovation choices we made so far. More updates on the finishing touches soon!
Thanks for stopping by!
