It was cold again in the Ozarks this morning; I’m pretty sure that’s pretty much how it will be from here on out for awhile.
After and I made it up our first few hills, the cold didn’t get to us anymore! Amazing how hiking up hills will get you warmed up on a cold morning. 🙃
We went in search of the Lion’s Mane mushroom that we found last week. I didn’t collect it at that point because I needed to do more research to be sure it was what I thought— I’m new to learning about fungi and had resolved to take it to the extension for identification.
I had eager visions in my head of a lovely shaggy mane, of it being right there and waiting to be cut up and dried and encapsulated. I take Lion’s Mane everyday for nerve issues, and I was ecstatic to think I may not have to pay for it!
We looked and looked, and ended up backtracking to look some more. I studied the picture of the tree in the picture I took of it last week, looking for the slightest clue of where it could be.
saw it first. The Lion’s Mane-less dead tree. I was devastated! I tromped off trail (very not like me) to look for any evidence, and found it.
A nibbled, gnarly bit of the once-glorious mushroom.
So much for my fungidreams. I’m hoping to find more, but as that was the only Lion’s Mane I’ve seen yet, I’m afraid I’ll need to order more rather than get out my dehydrator!
Along with solving the mystery of the missing Lion’s Mane, we also went into town to get our grocery shopping done, did house chores, and hung out with our kiddos.
Have an amazing day/night, fellow Hivians, where ever you find yourself!
