It’s been a long week of adapting to life realities and not having time to hike. Today I made sure to let that it was a top priority to get to the forest! So off we went. 😁
The wildlife was out and about, but most were way too fast to catch on camera. I was able to get some pics of a turtle of the Three-Toed-Box variety and a black Slimy Salamander. I never touch the wildlife, which is a very good thing, as apparently Slimy Salamanders can 'slime' you with their secretions (thus, the name) and the slime sticks like glue and is almost impossible to clean off. Ick!
Of course, autumn has made itself fully known in the Ozarks. The trees are showing off their colors and the forest is starting to look like a multi-hued tapestry from afar. We're set to get below freezing this week according to our forecast, so most of the green will likely be gone soon. As it is, with the storm from Saturday night, the trail was difficult to differentiate from the forest floor.
It rained, finally, Saturday night and this morning. The creeks had the faintest sound of trickling water for the first time in months. I’m hoping that we’ll have some new mushrooms to study in a few days, it's been weeks since we've seen any in the drought we've been having. 🤞
We found this interesting rock after I tripped on it. When I looked closely I realized it was carved. There were concentric circles, lines, and a shape that resembles an eye... could it be ancient? We know the natives of this area carved the stones, so... possibly? It’s a very soft stone, so it could have been carved more recently. I’ll be asking about it the next time we run into the trail master.
Other than hiking, we did chores, ran errands, and took care of a few items from our weekly goals list.
Have an amazing night/day, fellow Hiveans, wherever you are on this tiny planet!
