Hit the trail with today before he had to take off for work. We mixed it up and went the opposite way on our loop, for a bit of a change of pace.
We were met right off the bat with our local Pileated Woodpecker. He flew out of his nest and proceeded to circle all around the treetops above us, occasionally stopping to peck at trees and seemingly mock us with his laughing Woody the Woodpecker-like call. He’s big, about 18” from head to tail, and his call echoes all around. I was able to get a quick shot of him from afar.
I’m hoping there will be some baby woodpeckers to watch soon, but I haven’t seen evidence of any yet.
A bit further down the trail, I was able to sneak up on this swallowtail-less swallowtail butterfly. Apparently it had narrowly escaped the clutches of something that thought it looked tasty. I was worried it might have issues flying without it’s tail, but was proven wrong when a twig snapped under my foot and it flitted off without any problems at all!
The forest is bursting with life and growth, even in the tiniest places.
It was a gorgeous day and a refreshing tromp through our #ozarklife woods. Blue skies, tank top in early May, hand in hand with my love. The greatest times are the simplest ones!
All #photography in this post was taken by me, , with my iPhone6 of our #actifit #aliveandthriving #ozarklife. Thanks for reading! 🦋
