Although and I hiked our usual trail today, I’m going to share pictures from a daytrip we took on Thursday to an Ozark cavern that we toured with my parents and my Aunt.
We went to Blanchard Springs Caverns, in the Ozark- St. Francis National Park. It’s a huge living cavern that’s managed by the Forestry Service. They have made walking paths through it and lead limited tours.
As the tour progresses, the guide turns specific lights on and off, so that when the tours aren’t in session there are no lights. Photography was difficult as they don’t allow flash.
The formations consist of calcite and other minerals, and they’re constantly changing and growing as water filters through the ground.
Every time a new light is switched on, new formations are revealed.
The cave is home to tons of bats, many species of which are endangered, though they mainly reside in the lower chambers where tours aren’t allowed while the bats are in hibernation and breeding season.
It was fascinating to see the natural formations, and to learn about how the Forestry Service is working to protect the cave and the life forms that depend on it.
All #photography in this post was taken by me, , with my iPhone6, of our #aliveandthriving #actifit #ozarklife. Thanks for reading! 🦋
