The Love Story Behind a T-Shirt

Just yesterday, April 21, marked the second anniversary of the death of my nephew David, whom everyone called by the nickname Kavi, because that’s how he used to say his name when he was little. David died of bone cancer at the age of 18. He was an athletic young man, a good student, a good son, a good nephew, a good brother, and above all, he was a cheerful, witty, outgoing young man, full of life. We never imagined that death could take him away when he was just beginning to live.
Of course, his death was a devastating blow to our family, and for many months we were plunged into a state of denial, anger, depression, and sadness. But with time and the support we gave each other, we began to climb out of that dark hole from which we neither wanted nor had the strength to escape. It took months of individual and group work to not only accept his death but also to be grateful for the time David had spent with us.

One of the things we decided to do to honor his memory was to have a T-shirt made with his name and a picture of his face on it. That simple T-shirt, without many embellishments or logos, would also feature, on the back, phrases David used to say when he was a child. Those phrases, which may seem insignificant to others, are deeply meaningful to us.

When a loved one dies, we try to keep a part of that person with us. That’s why some people keep the deceased’s belongings intact—their clothes, their shoes, everything. Obviously, the easiest things to hold onto are the memories, those snippets of life we shared with them that will remain in our minds. That’s why photographs, videos, and letters become as precious as gold. In our case, we wanted to treasure those witty things David used to say when he was little.

How often do we buy clothes just because they’re in style, on a whim, or simply because they look good on us? Later, those items become part of a pile of clothes that hold no emotional value or significance for us. But this T-shirt is different: this T-shirt tells a story—the story of love between him and us. Every time we wear it and every time someone asks us about what’s written on the fabric, we’ll be talking about him.
Kavi’s T-shirt is a symbol of family unity, but it’s also a reminder that David is still with us. It’s not just a piece of clothing; it’s our protective shield when we get together or go on family trips. With it, we honor the life of our nephew, that little one who, though he was with us for only a short time, left an indelible mark.
