This stunning architectural marvel was commissioned by Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh (Who Was A Kachwaha Clan Ruler At That Time Period) and was built by Lal Chand Ustad around the 1799 AD and is also know as Place Of Wind
So what make this place unique is that it follows the principle of the repetitive pattern of windows & domed pavilions stacked together to resemble a honeycomb design. This is what makes it a unique structure.
The top floor is known as Hawa Mandir, it's literal translation in english is called Temple of wind. This was designed in such a way to allow air to pass through the lattices and small windows keeping the palace nice and cool for the living there.
Down below is the Chandrapoli gate which is basically the entrance to the palace. This gate is adorned with five Hindu Deities which are Lord Ganesha, Vishnu, Lakshmi, Shiva, and Kalki and deities along with two Dwarpal (Gatekeeper) on either side.
Ratan Mandir inside the palace consist of windows having multiple coloured glassworks which are known to resemble the colors of precious and semi-precious stones with which Jaipur is known to be closely associated for.
The lattices in the palace allowed royal women to witness the streets of Jaipur within the confines of City Palace and this is the same with all the palaces in Jaipur as well.
By the way You can enjoy a panoramic view of the city from atop the floors of the iconic Hawa Mahal. I couldn’t capture much of the view but here's this one image which came out quite well of a part of the view from the top.
Hawa Mahal is a major symbol of the grandeur and epitome of Rajput architecture, This place is not merely an exotic structure meant for the depiction of skills and workmanship which Rajput architecture attained. Hawa Mahal has been in use for almost 200 years and was then turned into a tourist attraction. In a way, it has become an emblem of the pink city (Jaipur)! It has enthralled visitors and travellers with its magnificent architecture ever since it was built!
If you love art, history, and architecture and appreciate such iconic beauty then this post should be enough reason for you to visit Hawa Mahal. This is one of the most accessible tourist attractions of Jaipur since it is located next to the famous bazaar of Jaipur which is Johari Bazar.
Here a quick Tip which might come in handy, The place gets crowded since its a small building so choose odd hours to avoid the rush during the tourist season so that you can bask in the beauty that this place has to offer at a slow pace.
All of the images were shot on a Canon 80D using a 50mm (Wish I Had A 35mm 😩) and in perfect natural lighting best of all the temperature was around 12 degrees so I had a blast 😂
Please do take your time to appreciate the architectural beauty of this place and I hope I captured it well enough ✨
