Time for some more images from the Tankspace shoot from last month...
I've already mentioned the Studio set-up for these Tankspace images HERE, HERE and
HERE, so without further ado, lets crack on with the images from this set.
Sharni
I have mentioned in the past that these Tankspace shoots are TFP (Trade For Prints) or these days its actually trade for digital images. This means that the models work for free, and are paid in images. Us photographers have to pay the studio fee for this one, although for 8 hours of shooty fun the price of £50 is pretty reasonable!
This means that at some point we all have to actually edit our images, and send them over for the various models to use, either on their social media accounts, or for their portfolios
Sharni
Usually this editing doesn't take too long, but when you factor in that 2000 images of 7 people over a period of 8 hours (including outfit changes and setup changes) this gets complicated really quickly.
The first job of sifting through thousands of images, all of which are very slightly different, is a mammoth task in itself.
Sharni
Several times I would open Lightroom, see all 2000 images that needed sorting, become completely overwhelmed and close it all down again.
The solution in the end was to just be super critical and start deleting images that weren't good enough, or don't make the grade in anyway.
when I say delete, I really mean removing from the current collection. I never actually delete the RAW files, just in case I want to go back to an old shoot and re-edit some

First I went through and tagged each image with the respective models name, and then I went through each set in turn, and cast out all the rubbish ones.
Awkward pose? delete...
Hair covering face? delete...
Out of focus or blurred? delete...
Chopped limbs (or head) off? delete...
Weird facial expression? delete...
Two images taken one after the other and hence look identical? delete one of those too!

Eventually, after being super critical, I can whittle each model down to approximately 25 images. As I do this I make basic edits as I go (re-cropping, shadows, contrast, white balance etc)
Now I can export them from Lightroom and into Photoshop to make the final decisions and the final edits
This point is the fun part. After sifting through image after image and seeing the mistakes and errors, I am left with the best of the images I was able to capture that day.

At this point I'm now playing. First I copy the image on to a second layer (this means the original is always untouched so I can refer back to it to see if my editing is actually improving the image).
Then I do the bulk of the image manipulation (using either the Clone Stamp tool or the Spot Healing Brush) by cloning out unwanted elements (hair, lights or dust particles in the water). The lights had power cables, so they needed cloning out too

I then apply frequency separation. This technique was originally used to touch up skin detail on high-end beauty shots, but I use it most often now as a way of sharpening the image, and as it adds on the 'detail' on a 2nd layer I am able to fine tune the sharpening to precisely how I want it.
The next step is to add a couple of adjustment layers (contrast, curves, colour balance) and literally just play with the settings and see what works. I don't go into these images with a set 'end result' in mind

Once I'm happy with how it looks, I can then go back to the other images and start working on those. And then once I've got 8-10 images, I am finally in a position to pass them on to the model to use. Some prefer sharing via Facebook, but FB ruins the images by compressing them etc, so I always prefer sending them via email.
After about 4 hours work, I can then move onto the next model and start the whole process again!
There were 6 models in total, and 3 models are completed...
Yay! I'm halfway through!
I'll have a break this evening, and carry on with the 2nd half tomorrow, I expect to be able to share the rest of them at the weekend fingers crossed, so I'll see you then!
