The mountains greeted me with their silent, comforting way, that only they know. Everything looked the same but then again, they didn't. Nothing was changed in the village either. Time runs slowly here, I know it very well. But still the difference was apparent and it had nothing to do with the scenery. It was me. I was different and everything, looked different in my eyes too.
Eight months can be a long time when you take life changing decisions. And the last eight months have change my perspective in a drastic and irreversible way.
In March 2014 and myself, took a few belongings and our dog and came to this very village in search of a new life, away from the city and closer to nature. The island of Crete meant to be our home for nine years offering us the rural scenery to explore our inner selves as well as our connection with nature itself. In March 2023 we were packing again and left for a new episode in our lives. Coming back to the place that it all started triggered mixed and a bit confusing feelings.
The sentiment of return overshadowed the thrill of the brief journey. Every morning I struggled to realise that I wasn't home and I was there just for a few weeks. Understandable on one hand but also confusing, on the other. I guess it is not common when you move out of a place to come back for awhile. But that's the case in our occasion. We still have unfinished business in Crete, olive groves that need our attention, a farm that we started and is now on a knife-edge.
The serenity of the place on one hand, the hardships of everyday life, on the other.
How did I left such beauty?
and
What was I thinking coming to live here?
were alternating in my mind.
I am grateful for the years that I spend here but the circle has close, or should I say, it is gradually closing. At least until I tie up all the loose ends.
This was the eighth part of our trip from Nafplio to Crete, in order to harvest our olives and visit the places and the people that formed our daily life for almost a decade. It lasted from the first of November till the fifth of December and it was totally different from whatever we anticipated.
