How can one resist taking a walk through memory lane? This is exactly what drew me to the Photography Lovers End of Year Contest run by in the Photography Lovers community.
I'm no photographer and all these images were taken with my smartphone, no fancy camera; but they all mean something very special to me.
The Indian Ocean
If I were to choose between the mountains and the sea, the latter would be my choice as I grew up with a family of fishermen, so my love of the sea goes way back to childhood days. Sitting listening to the waves from the warm waters of the Indian Ocean breaking as they come rolling into shore is the very best medicine.
The waves always look enormous and threatening as if they will swallow one, but I know it will become just a gentle wave by the time it hits the shoreline. It's slightly different when sitting on the rocks, but I love the sound, the smell as well as the salty and cooling spray on a hot winter's day.
Yes, you heard right, this was mid-winter, but living in a subtropical area where our rainy season is in summer, winter is actually the best time to take a break to the seaside as the days are sunny and hot.
This rocky beach forms the border of the Umdoni Park Golf Club and I love the breathtaking view of the rolling greens, with the gracious Cape-Dutch style clubhouse and the ocean in the background.
The Drakensberg
We love escaping to the Drakensberg at least once a year amidst the mountains. I always enjoy watching the mist covering the mountain tops every morning and late afternoon, like a snowy blanket.
My man trying his hand at fly-fishing in the Cathkin Park region where we spent a glorious couple of days far from the madding crowds with our older son and his lady.
Father and son enjoying rigging up, hoping to land a trout or a good size bass, but the best was just being together. We had not seen him since Christmas last year with Covid around, as he lives a seven hours drive from us.
Being an incorrigible foodie who enjoys cooking and baking and...eating of course...a foodie photo or two has to creep in, and this was our delectable dessert bought at a bakery on a wheat farm not far from our lodgings.
Doesn't it look good?
Food...more glorious Food...
I have not done much food blogging of late because my sense of smell has gone haywire so I do not enjoy playing in the kitchen as much as I did up till the 1st of July, but that's another story.
A quick snack platter was put together when special friends came for a rare visit. I made it for a foodie challenge and it required no cooking whatsoever but looked really gorgeous.
A Garlic & Herb Butter layered Star Bread was also for a foodie challenge, not only looked really pretty but was absolutely yum!
A simple and quick breakfast of Avocado and Eggs on toast can also look pretty if one puts a loving touch to it.
90th Birthday of my tiny Mom Lily
Lily of the Valley as she was called by her brother, used to be fiercely independent but is becoming frailer by the day and she hates it, but she still manages to smile and laugh about things at times. We had a small 90th birthday celebration with just her children and some of the grandchildren in September.
So, I shared more than three of my favourite photos of three subjects, but a fourth one crept in as I simply could not resist sharing that special occasion here.
I hope you enjoyed a little peek into some special times we enjoyed this year.
