The Lambgift and russgift sheep are endemic to Gotland.　They are maintained in Skansen for conservation purposes.　They are said to be a hardy breed that is better able to cope with the environment than those bred for mass production of wool.

Gotland style barn in Skansen

Skansen has a dozen breeds that are included in various conservation programmes. Our old native breeds are hardy and often remain healthy well into old age. They can survive on meagre pastures and take good care of their offspring. These are abilities that may be needed if today's production breeds prove unable to cope with climate change, diseases or other changes in the future. Old native breeds are also part of our cultural history, and are often well suited for landscape management and nature preservation. Sweden has signed the Convention on Biological Diversity, meaning that we are obliged to preserve old native breeds.

In Sweden, non-profit associations manage the conservation of our native breeds. Registration and breeding aim to carefully increase the number of individuals within the breed, while maintaining the genetic variation. You will find our old native breeds at the Skane farmstead, the Oktorp farmstead, the summer pasture farm and in the Godland area. You can also see some native breeds at Lill-Skansen.
