Being an adult in Nigeria is an interesting adventure. For some people, it is like roaming through a wilderness, no a rain forest, foraging for herbs and plants and avoiding wild animals so as to survive. Survival is the average mindset of the young adult in Nigeria and one thing that is essential for that is food.
But you see, when it comes to young adults who are males and yet to marry, the category that is called Bachelors, the very first thing on his mind is money, food can come later, rest can come later, health can come later. So the Nigerian bachelor is always on the move, looking for more money, more ways to make money, it's all about money.
Remember, It's all about surviving in a place like Nigeria. And the greatest odds of survival lie with those with the largest amount of money. Coupled with the Nigerian tradition and the prevalent mentality that ladies are the ones who should be doing the cooking, finding a bachelor who can cook his own meals is like finding gem in a mine.
Most Nigerian bachelors buy food and would rather eat snacks and take a soft drink than get into a kitchen and make their meal. But a lot of times, getting a place that offers hygienic and satisfying meals is usually a problem, so the alternative is to get snacks or resort to the saving grace of bread.
Bread is that food that is always available for the bachelor. The Nigerian bachelor would go to work all day and maybe forget to get food on his way back, what does he do? He enters the area, and buys bread and coke. Bread is so multipurpose that it can go with almost anything. It can be eaten with beans, usually as a meal, but the bachelor would buy the beans and take it home, cooked of course.
Bread and groundnut, that one is for fast relief from the pains of hunger. Together with a soft drink, or the local drink called kunu, it has this very satisfying taste. How about bread and bean cake, popularly known as akara? Or bread and coconut.. this one is considered the combination for big boys in some areas.
The good thing about bread is that it goes well with any soft drink or juice you decide to take. Then there is my personal favourite... bread and suya, very tasty combo that would leave you satisfied.
What more can I say, there were nights that I could have slept hungry if not for the saving grace of bread. Whoever invented bread did us a favor for all ages. Thinking about it, bread has been around for a very long time. Leavened or unleavened, bread is a good source of carbs.
