Hello everyone! and Happy New Year!
This week I went for some groceries and out of nowhere I had this idea of sharing with you what prices Romanian people get to see these days.
In Romania, there are widely spread all over the country German two chains for supermarkets, both of them very very popular. Well, there are a few more but these two are the most beloved ones, named Lidl and Kaufland.
In my post I'll talk about Lidl. This supermarket is not that big, but it was the best regarding quality in Romania in the last years. Well, at least thats my opinion.
Now there is also MegaImage and Auchan, two hypermarkets that people seem to love. I dont have these in my city so I dont do my shopping there. Only from time to time when I'm in Timisoara.
So I'll stick with Lidl.
I will talk about prices in this post, as this was actually my idea. I forgot to take some pics inside the store, I hope this is not a problem. But I promise I'll be back someday with pics and some more stuff.
So, this is what 550 RON look like.
That would be:
- 115 Euro
- 120$
- 172 AUD
- 90 Gpb
- 145 CAD
Let's see what we have here, so you can make yourself an idea if this is cheap, normal or expensive compared with prices you have in your country.
I buy food based on our needs or based on what we'd like to eat the few next dsys.
I usually have a grocery list, even though there are only the basic foods I know I'll need. And then I add some more based on what I see in that very moment.
I always need something when I go for geoceries in one of these stores. There arent times I remember to just walk inside of a supermarket and not having at least one item on my list.
All right, here it is!
If you are interested in a particular item and you want to know its price, leave a comment down below.
I'll try aproximate the value of the foods here! But its just an aproximation based on the receipt.

This time I have some
- Bio Potatoes ~2$
- Bio Onion 1$
- Bio Red Bell Pepper 2$
- Cherry tomatoes 1-2$

Dairy
I dont usually buy so many cheeses and dairy, so this time is a first in a long time.
I bought so many because we want to have more salads these days and I thought to replace meat with mozzarella cheese or grilled cheese. Eggs too, but these I have them from my mom, home raised.
My husband loves cheddar so we took two of those this time. We use it in egg omelette, grilled sandwiches or on top of tortillas (oven baked).
The list will be something like this:
- Bio natural yoghurt (I did my yoghurt at home in the last one year but with the holidays, I went off so I bought a few until I'm ready to do my own again) 0.75$/peace
- sheep cheese (I love it. It is very creamy) 7$
- shredded mozzarella 2$
- mini mozzarella cheese balls 1$
- greek style cheese cubes (olives too) 1.50$
- german butter 250g 3$
- haloummi cheese 2packs 4$
- Scottish matured colored cheddar 2.20$
- English Vintage Cheddar 2.30$
- Edam Hard cheese 2.20$
- Bio Wiesentaler Cheese slices 2$
- Cheese Fondue 3$
Meat
- Bio Smoked Salmon 4.20$
- Prague ham 1$
- Salmon 5$
- Rib Eye Steak 10$
- Beef steak 7$
- Prawns 4.5$
- Turkey breast 5.30$
Others
We got some:
- kitchen paper towels 3$
- red beans can 400g 0.50$
- oat milk 1.20$
- vit C and propolis food supplement 2.30$
- olives mix 1.70$
- dried plums 1.30$
- pine nuts 1.30$
- pumpkin seeds 1.20$
- coffee 5.30$
- 2 yunmy pita bread 1$
All right, so my fair opinion I will say, food is quite pricey lately.
And I'm sure Romanian people feel the same.
Some foods are just right, some others are a bit expensive compared with what we had a few months ago.
For example the kitchen paper towells were 8 RON, now they are 14 RON, almost 3$.
What you see on the receipt is actually 650 RON but that is because I bought some toys, 100 RON.
The rest of money is for groceries, 550 RON.
So what do you think?
How is it compared with the prices and economics in your country? I'm really curious to find out. Can you buy the same amount of food with this money, or would you spend more? Or maybe less?
Greetings from Romania,
Missdeli ❤️
