Well, I'm back for a Market Friday post.
Hopefully I get this scheduled properly otherwise will get after me for posting on the wrong day.
It was actually a Tuesday shop at a shop I've never been to before. That's a bit of a rarity for me because after 20 years in the same town I thought I knew all the best places for shopping.
I'm happy to say that I was mistaken.
The Quest for 99cent Strawberry plants
This trip all came about because my wife heard about cheap strawberry plants at the Devon Nursery. 99 cents (about .69HBD but I'll use Canadian Dollars for the rest of the post).
There they are. Cheap Strawberry plants.
But three was a lot more than just strawberry plants
I was shocked at just how much was in the store.
There were very long aisles with plants of lots of different types of varieties. The prices were actually quite good too. At least in my opinion.
Lots of pretty flowers for $1.99 each
Violets, Pansies, Mum's, Begonia's and more were all availalbe for $1.99. I don't know if they are perennial or whether they are near end of life but still seemed like a good deal to me.
The off limits area
Now the next pictures were Staff Only but that didn't mean I couldn't take a peek. There were huge greenhouses with lots and lots of plants sitting there. No idea what they were but here's some pictures so you can get an idea of how large it is.
Veggies Cheaper than the Grocery Store
Now right now I can tell you that lettuce is selling at the grocery store for $2.99 for a head of lettuce. Imagine how surprised I was when I found that a perfectly good looking lettuce plant about the same size as what is being sold in the grocery store is going for $1.99.
Even if I'm not going to try and grow the plant that seems like a pretty good deal. Kale and Swiss Chard are even more expensive at the grocery store. I will admit the Swiss Chard did look on the small side. Might need more time to grow bigger
Fruit Trees and Berry Bushes
Now next up were the fruit trees and berry bushes. The trees were expensive so if I wanted to buy apple, pear, cherry or other fruit trees they weren't going to be cheap.
I also saw they had berry bushes. Now blueberry bushes wouldn't surprise me. However, when I found they had Pomegranate, Cranberry and Huckleberry bushes I will admit that I was a bit pleasantly surprised.
Free is a Good Price
Now I'm not actually too sure what these are. They are supposedly self watering pots. They are just little and probably not that useful but one free with each plant purchased so guess what... My wife picked up a bunch of them ... no real surprise there. Now I just hope they are useful.
Time to Checkout
What can I say. My wife found the strawberry plants she wanted and I got to see a bunch of possible plants to buy later. I took a picture of the receipt but it was all blurry. Regardless it was all under $20 so I was happy with that.
A little surprising but they had more than just plants
I wasn't really expecting ice cream cones for $1.99. Chips for 49 cents. a variety of specialty cheese and slushies for 99 cents also. In Canada those are just really cheap prices. A pleasant surprise to be certain.
(more than just plants)
One final surprise when we left
After we left and I was heading back to the car I noticed there was one more little surprise beside the parking lot.
It seems that they have a little pen for a few animals.
This goat came up to say hello and there was another in the enclosure as well.
In addition to the goats there were also chickens.
Just sitting there minding their own business.
Overall a pleasant experience and I now know a new store in the Abbotsford area.
Thanks for taking a look at this #marketfriday post.
