Luna and her siblings
One of Luna's siblings turned out to have the calicivirus and because of too many toxins (deworming), he developed edema about two weeks before Luna was allowed to go home. It was very sad to see how his little paw turned bigger and bigger and he needed medication, vet appointments, and of course, rest. The foster did a great job putting him aside from the 4 other siblings because they are quite raw playing, he needed to have a place to heal without being jumped upon.
Thankfully, after a few vet appointments, medication, and a lot of TLC from the foster and her parents (they were visiting during these weeks), the kitten slowly recovered and was allowed to go to his forever home where his sister was waiting for him. The other 4 kittens were allowed to leave on the same day as they tested negative for leukemia and feline aids.
Too many toxins
The kittens were exposed to too many toxins for deworming which probably allowed the calicivirus to develop symptoms in the case of one kitten, while the others probably have it but are asymptomatic. This means they were advised against deworming on the day they left for the new homes, to avoid the others getting ill as well. I'm happy they handled it like this because I surely didn't wish that trouble upon any of the other kittens. We had to wait about 10 days before we could make an appointment for the vaccine and chip, and not deworm them to hopefully avoid the others to develop symptoms. How this plans out, we'll have to wait and see. Fingers crossed they stay healthy.
Different treatments needed
The other two kittens, the foster babies Aki and Percy, also needed to have their vaccine and I was asked to take all three kittens at once so I could take the final steps for the adoption of Luna as well as give Aki and Percy their vaccinations as well as deworming sessions. It also meant we would get the passport for Luna with all the needed data inside.
I removed this whole paragraph as it was about Mochi getting chipped and vaccinated, the rest of the post was written before Mochi died. This was all irrelevant now. :(
Calling for the appointment
To get the appointment, I was instructed what everyone needs by the organization and asked to make an appointment for the 7th of June. I made sure to translate everything I needed to say in Spanish and wrote it down in a document so I can't make any mistakes or things don't get lost in translation. I call them prepared, haha. I still postpone these things if I can simply because I don't feel 100% comfortable yet doing this but we're making progress for sure.
I practiced what I needed to say and I think it sounded 100% Spanish, lol. During the call, everything went smoothly and it was definitely not brought up that something was not clear or need to change to English. I know the assistant doesn't speak English, the VET and the other assistant do though. I prefer just taking care of it in Spanish as I need to learn it anyway and when we keep switching to English, I will not progress. Every time I made a successful call in Spanish, I feel proud afterward, haha.
How did they do
Luna was first to receive her chip, she didn't make a sound, and neither did she when she got her vaccination. I was a proud kitten mommy! She also got her passport afterwards so now she's officially mine. Yay!
Aki was next as she was trying to get the treat Luna received for being so brave, I had a hard time wrapping her in a blanket (Luna didn't need this, she's much chiller lol) and she already did some damage to my hand earlier that day when I wanted to clean her behind so I was not having any more scratches that day, lol. When she was wrapped, she tried to escape but she only needed the vaccination and afterward the anti-parasite pipette, it was all done quite fast. Aki also got a treat but she didn't want it anymore, she just wanted to be back in the carrier, haha.
Percy was last and was easier to handle than Aki, he was scared though, which was sad but at least he didn't try to escape as wildly as Aki did (read: this hurts my hands lol). It was all done quickly he received the same treatment as Aki and afterward, they had to wait a bit until the passport and green cards were updated fully. Within 1 minute they were all sleeping though. So all was well.
Luna the day after
Where I kind of expected this to happen, with her lesser immune system, Luna developed a bit of a higher temperature (didn't measure it, I felt it without doing so) and didn't want to eat afterward. She was mostly sleeping but the others were very tame as well. I think they all felt less great than normal so we put them inside the playpen early that evening to just sleep it off, hoping the next day everything was going to be fine.
Nurse Aki taking care of the patient <3
The next day they played and Aki had as much energy as she always has, she's also some weeks older and is stronger so it seems. Percy slept a bit more but Luna slept throughout most of the day. She was happy to cuddle when we motivated her, and she played a little but overall, she mostly rested the day after.
Private accommodation for the patient
Limping and temperature
While my daughter mentioned to me once during the afternoon that she thought Luna was trembling, I thought she was just responding to the fever first. Later that evening, I noticed she also did it when she was very relaxed sleeping next to me. I started to worry a bit and decided to ask my friend for advice. I ended up getting her to the vet that next day, I will share how that went in the next blog.
One thing that was clear immediately when she started feeling bad and that is how much we all love Luna after such a short period of time. We were afraid to lose another cat this soon and it was not a pleasant feeling.
Spoiler Alert She's doing great at the time of writing this. So please don't worry!
