Goooood day @Homeedders I trust you have all been safe and well. Today we turn things up in cooking class with Little miss at a more advanced level. I have to admit I am not the best at pastries or sweets but little miss insisted on us cooking some sweets so we tried our hands at cinnamon scrolls!
For the filling we used 2/3 cup brown sugar ,1 ½ tablespoons ground cinnamon and a table spoon of sugar and ground it all up. For the pastry we cheated and bought frozen puff pastry that we used 3 sheets for. I think our sugar mixture was a little too much sugar as I found them to be to sweet.
We layered the pasty in a row and spread melted butter across it all so that our sugar mixture would stick.
After that we rolled the pastry into a long roll tightly and then pressed firmly along it to ensure that it would stick and not fall apart during cooking. Although, I didn't think at the time once cooking the sugar melts and it sticks.
I wasn't sure how big to cut them so we guesstamated and made 11 Cinnamon scrolls which we lined a baking tray with baking paper and placed them in the oven to cook at 180 degrees Celsius until they were golden brown.
But while they were cooking we decided to make some sugar glaze and I found a recipe that called for icing sugar which I was totally devastated about because I don't have any.
So as we were grasping with defeat little miss insisted that we ask google how to make icing sugar and it is a good thing I listened to her because apparently all you need to do is blend sugar and it turns into icing sugar (I was today years old when I learned that) Did you know that?
So boom! little miss's skills of research once again paid off and we were back in the game for making some home made glaze!
With 1 cup icing sugar (home made) 1 table spoon vanilla extract and 4 table spoons of milk (which we added a little more in so I am not sure of the full total) we mixed away until we were left with a smooth consistent kinda goo which was our glaze!
Now it was time to remove our cinnamon scrolls from the oven and drizzle our glaze all over them for an additional sugar hit! (Oh I think I made a bad mistake with all this sugar)
But yummy! Although, as I said earlier I think we used too much sugar as a few of them came out with more of a toffee filling or we didn't evenly spread them out enough and some got more cinnamon mix than others. Nonetheless we were now ready and all we had to do was wait for them to cool down and eat. We did catch cheeky mummy stealing some while they were too hot!
But she made it ok by complimenting Little Miss on her culinary skills!
The verdict? Better than the shop dad!
And there you have it our advanced home economics class turned into a wonderful home learning event that even little bloke sat in on. Although I would highly recommend using maybe a little less sugar for your fillings if you're wanting to make them yourselves at home.
But the glaze was impressive!
