I tried an experiment this year. I usually set aside a section in my garden for potatoes.
But this year because of life and time and all that sort of things, my garden took a back seat. Now this does not mean that I am not growing anything but I just had to find a new way of growing without the time to dedicate to tilling and weeding and watering and fighting critters.
What's gardener to do?
I decided to do what I call "guerrilla" gardening. I would find containers and odd places in various beds and just plant there.
The photo above is of an old whiskey barrel that I used to plant flowers in, but this year I planted my potatoes. Now the barrel full of potatoes is not ready for harvest. Three weeks before I planted in the barrel, dropped two seed potatoes into a container.
The vines died off and it is time to see if I got any potatoes.
I dumped out the dirt onto a plastic bag, since I will use the soil again. Can you see it? I got at least one potato.
Five good sized red potatoes and two seed potatoes!
Not bad for my first go at container growing.
For what its worth, I boiled these and served with butter and chives.
So can you grow potatoes in a container?
Why yes you can!
The vines in the barrel are beginning to die off so we shall see what we get in two weeks.
