As I said in my previous Walk with Me post, my husband just brought home the newest addition to our little, growing homestead!
Everyone, meet Meatloaf!
Meatloaf is 500 pound, white-faced, Hereford cross breed steer. The husband acquired him just yesterday from a local livestock auction. We paid only $230 for this guy!
Meatloaf will be fed and fattened up until about mid June, when he goes to the processing place in Summersville to be turned into many, many delicious things!
One of the things I like the most about getting our food this way is that I know what I've fed them and I know how clean their living conditions are and basically I know if the animal had a good life or not. I know we will give Meatloaf the best care we can while he is here and in return we will get the best meat we can! Happy steers are yummy steaks.
So that's the big announcement! I love having new members of the homestead, even if he's just here for a few months. He's a cutie and he doesn't run off when I approach the fence. He's going to be one happy cow.
Thanks for stopping by! What does your family raise for meat? Do you have any cows? Or a cow, like us? Tell me all about it!
