The Joys of eating.
We have a saying in our house, "some people live to eat and some people eat to live".
We have both in our house. Luke eats to live... but, only if we help.
Exactly a year ago, Luke was hospitalized with double pneumonia. This image is from January 2017 with Luke and his service dog friend Herry.
It was a very dramatic experience. Luke changed dramatically after that. While his lungs recovered eventually, everything else regressed. This past year, Luke has lost a lot of his functions. The biggest one being his desire to eat. It has become our goal to get 2000 calories per day in him, it takes a lot of work.
He used to cook simple things like a quesadilla on his own and eat it with no help. Now, if we don't sit down to feed him, he will not communicate he is hungry or make no effort to feed himself. It has been my goal to try to get him back to where he was or at least keep him from declining further.
I measure and count every calorie that goes into his little body. We are Finding Joy in using fun measuring cups to get his calories in him. Luke seems to really enjoy using tiny cups and plates. This includes his food, his bites have to be cut up into tiny pieces.
We try to keep feeding enjoyable and hope that one day he will have desire to eat again all on his own. Last night Luke and I sat down and enjoyed watching the "Goonies" while he ate his ice cream.
Every step of the way we'll be working at FINDING JOY in the little accomplishments like getting 2000 calories in one day!
