On Tuesday I got the morning stuff done and started checking on seedlings. The kale was mostly all up, I just had to transplant a few of the extras and moved it to the porch. I restarted arnica, columbine, and verbascum. Some had come up from the first starting but not enough.
My helper friend arrived at 9:30 and prepped all the vegs for supper.
I had started the corned beef I’d made without “pink salt” aka sodium nitrite. This means it won’t stay the bright red/pink most people associate with corned beef.
When we finished those jobs we headed outside. It was a lovely spring day. I planned to get some raking done on the backyard and my helper was cutting away the broken stuff on the shrubs from the last storm.
I found these snow crocus open in the East Shed garden when I got out there.
I got this area around the clothesline done and that was enough for the first day.
My helper went down and moved the onions to the new root cellar. That completely finishes the new root cellar project.
The new root cellar looks bare, but I hadn’t put up much food last year. This year I hope to do a lot more.
Mid afternoon my son went out and weedwacked the wildflower area. Not much had come up yet.
In the South garden these Chiondoxas had opened. I think they are volunteers.
In the South Herb garden the chives are just up.
This year we tried parsnips in place of potatoes. (I shouldn’t eat potatoes, a member of the nightshade family, as it causes pain.) I got the vegs in around 5PM and the corned beef and cabbage was ready just after 5:30PM when my brother got home.
We got my apple cider vinegar out and filled a good size pitcher, as both of us loved this meal drowned in vinegar. Boy was it good. The parsnips are a bit odd in vinegar though and cooked a bit too fast for this type of meal. Beets are an alternative but are usually cooked separately. Maybe I will try those next time.
The nearby stable had called me about mulch hay, so my son and I will be going to move that on Wednesday morning. I hope to get some more raking done as rain is coming on Thursday through Saturday.
