I don’t know about you, but bread is one of my favourite comfort foods….especially when it is made with flour that we ground at home, from wheat that a neighbour grew. Today I woke up early to bake bread, a symbolic tradition of sharing and friendship…which is perfect for today as is coming over to help me on the Hempcrete Haywagon House! Today I decided to go on a bread baking extravaganza and bake three loaves. This is enough to last me a week (if it’s just me and the little girls at home). When I have wwoofers, my older children are over, or I have company, I will typically go through 6 loaves a week…sometimes 10.
Lately I’ve been baking a lot of sourdough. After 5 years of trying and trying and trying to get it right…I’ve finally had success! This is a skill I had been trying to foster for so long as the care, nurture and use of sourdough starter means that I have even greater security for my family. It means I don’t need commercial yeast to bake bread…and it tastes amazing.
Today I settled on baking 2 loaves of sourdough…and for a treat, some traditional sandwich bread.
I’m going to share my sourdough recipe first. This is a perfect recipe for newbie sourdough bakers. After all….it worked for me!
And...my ALL TIME favourite whole wheat sandwich bread. This is the old standby bread that I have been baking for almost a decade. It is perfect for using sifted, home ground, whole wheat flour in. I hope you enjoy!
Let me know if you have any questions about the recipes! And...I would love to see yours!
From my home fire to yours, hai hai.
