Back in the days when living on the island of Sint Martin I was trying to build my own herbs. This had a couple of reasons: Import of all food to the island is costly and also occurs mostly in frozen condition are the most important ones. With the freezing of the products the quality jumps back so much it is worth it to try and grow your own stuff. And not that I have anything against frozen products, but also the handling of the products in a tropical situation leaving it outside for a while defrosting and then freezing it again really doesn't make anything better.
Apart from that it is ridiculously satisfying to grow your own stuff!
Mint
So now with having a garden and a less tropical climate here in Holland it was time to get some stuff growing again. And with success I must say! Look at this peppermint here which is actually the super basic one that comes from the supermarket, but then put in a pot afterwards for its second, third and fifth life. Stronger than ever with this climate of sun and rain over the last couple of weeks.
Basil, Thyme and Rosemary
Also this basil has given me more stuff leaves than I would ever imagine. Keeping basil in pot inside of the house was always kind of a disappointmeent to me because it is so sensitive on water. But when outside it seems to regulate itself so much better. Only this you need to do is use it every now and then so some new leaves will grow back.
The other green friend are thyme and rosemary growing together in a pot. Maybe it is because they also go so well together in food that I deceided to keep them together but these guys over potatoes coming straight from the over? That is almost heaven!
That is the cool thing on having your own herbs I find. Whenever you buy fresh ones from the store this is always annoying because you do not always need the whole bush and then forget about it again. Next time you find them again, they have died so keeping them in your garden is so much more sustainable.
Strawberries
Ahhhh these guys are the new best friends for in the morning. Almost every day we are able to get a couple of young strawberries from the garden for in the yoghurt. Same thing here, you do not need to buy a whole karton but a couple of them daily is really just enough. And they taste SO good and SO sweet. No bought strawberry can beat this in a lifetime.
