**ESPAÑOL** Hola, hola amigos amantes de la naturaleza es un placer saludarles deseando que tengan un excelente y bendecido fin de semana, en esta ocasión les comparto mi visita a un llamativo jardín, donde la mayoría de las plantas se caracterizan por tener espinas, en muy pocas ocasiones he visto este tipo de plantas y me llamó la atención por sus espinas y curiosas flores, al principio pensé que eran familia de la Sábila, pero la señora dueña del jardín me explicó que pertenece a la familia de los Agave, se utilizan en México y parte de América central para preparar bebidas alcohólicas, sin embargo ella solo las utiliza como decoración en el jardín y como muro de protección en los bordes del jardín resguardando algunas plantas con hermosas flores que con esmero cuida en el jardín. A modo de anécdota, hace varios meses en compañía de una amiga, fuimos a visitar a esta señora, veníamos huyendo de un perro, nos caímos y aterrizamos en una de estas plantas con espinas, que por cierto son duras y pinchan fuerte, lo bueno fue que la señora se lo tomó en broma y solo advirtió que pondría un cartel indicando que las plantas tienen espinas. Another plant in the garden is the well-known Agave americana [American agave](https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agave_americana). It stands out for having yellow stripes along the edges of its leaves, which are similar to those of the previous plant. It also has spines and is native to Mexico and the southern United States, although it is now found in many regions of the world as ornamental and protective plants in gardens. Its growth is slow and can take between 5 and 7 years. It has a peculiar characteristic: it flowers only once in its lifetime, developing an inflorescence that can measure between 3 and 5 meters in height. The flower is very attractive to bees, which are regularly found around this plant. After producing fruit, the plant dies. It is drought-resistant and can tolerate direct sunlight as long as it is in well-drained soil that allows nutrients to flow through the roots. One of the characteristics of this plant is the height the flower can reach; it grows from the center approximately three to five meters. In the photograph, we observe the length of the branch. Otra de las plantas en el jardín es la conocida como [Agave americana](https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agave_americana), destaca por tener franjas amarillas en los bordes de las hojas, las cuales son similares a la anterior, también poseen espinas y es originaria de México y el sur de Estados Unidos, aunque actualmente se encuentran distribuidas en en muchas regiones del mundo como plantas ornamentales y de protección para los jardines, su crecimiento es lento y puede tardar entre 5 y 7 años, tiene una característica peculiar y es que florece una sola vez en su vida, desarrollando una inflorescencia que puede medir entre 3 y 5 m de altura, la flor es muy llamativa para las abejas quienes regularmente se encuentran alrededor de esta planta. Luego de producir el fruto la planta muere, es resistente a la sequía y puede recibir el sol directo siempre y cuando se encuentre en suelos bien drenados que permitan el flujo de los nutrientes por la raíz, una de las características que tiene esta planta es la altura que puede alcanzar la flor esta crece desde el centro aproximadamente tres o cinco metros en la fotografía observamos lo extenso de la rama, en este tallo hay varias ramas con las flores sin abrir, son regularmente de un color que va entre amarillo y marrón, los frutos son de color verde a marrón cuando están maduros, tienen forma de cápsula, cuando maduran y termina el ciclo, y la planta necesita ser reemplazada, también se le conoce como maguey. **Usos** Su uso más conocido es la producción del Pulque con el zumo azucarado, extraído de la savia del tallo floral, antes de la floración, una vez fermentado se obtiene esta bebida, también un licor destilado llamado Mezcal. Continuing through the garden, I found another thorny plant called [Yucca aloifolia](https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/yucca-aloifolia/). Its leaves are thin and lance-shaped, and it's stronger than the two Agave specimens. It grows to several meters tall, and as it ages, the trunk exposes more of its roots. It's native to the Atlantic coast and the Gulf of Mexico, growing in sandy soils. Its leaves are rigid and firm, and its thorns are very sharp and usually black. It's used as a barrier to keep intruders out of the garden. While we were walking through the garden, I accidentally got pricked by one of its thorns. As I mentioned, the thorns are strong and pointed. It's an ornamental plant and adapts very well to dry climates. Its leaves are flat and sword-shaped, and its flowers are large, bell-shaped, and fragrant. After finishing our tour of the garden, we took the opportunity to enjoy a delicious cup of hot chocolate and wait for the rain to stop. Nature definitely always surprises us, and this occasion was no exception. The three plants share similar characteristics in terms of their pointed, thorny leaves. It was interesting to learn that all three are native to Mexico and have spread to several countries, where they have different uses. In Venezuela, the most common use is as an ornamental plant and as a protective barrier for gardens.

Avanzando en el jardín encontré otra planta con espinas cuyo nombre es [Yucca aloifolia](https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/yucca-aloifolia/) las hojas son delgadas en forma de lanza y son más fuerte que los dos ejemplares de Agave, crece varios metros y mientras más años tenga el tronco va exponiendo las raíces, es originaria de las costas atlánticas y el Golfo de México, crece en suelos arenosos, sus hojas son rígidas y firmes, las espinas son bien afiladas y generalmente de color negro, se utiliza como barrera para mantener alejados a los intrusos del jardín. Mientras recorríamos el jardín por accidente me pinchó una de ellas, las espinas como lo mencioné son fuertes y puntiagudas, es una planta ornamental y se adapta muy bien a los climas secos, las hojas son planas en forma de espada, las flores son grandes en forma de campana y fragantes. Terminado el recorrido por el jardín. aprovechamos para tomar una deliciosa taza de chocolate y esperar que cesara la lluvia; definitivamente la naturaleza siempre nos sorprende y esta ocasión no fue la excepción, las tres plantas comparten características similares en cuanto a las hojas puntiagudas y con espinas, fue intersante saber que las tres plantas son originarias de México y se han esparcido por varios paises, en los cuales tienen dierentes usos, en Venezuela el más común es ornamental y barrera protectora para los jardines.
