The world keeps changing so why can't I change my life path? In 2017, I came to Canada with a dream to fulfill my goal as a reputable researcher. I finished my Master's and PhD in Brazil. And started applying to everywhere, not only in Canada. I had an important interview with Senior Researchers known around the Globe, including England, Belgium, New Zealand and USA. Got a job in a Cancer Institute in Canada. My wish to progress in a science career grew, but after a while, I started to reassess.

I learned many things during this path. The first one is that my talk about not caring about money was "BS". With a family and bills, you see how important money is, and science can give you a life, but not a very comfortable life with money that you can save all the time. Here in Canada, we can pay the bills working in the area, but still not with multiple trips going around the world with family, especially when your family now has 2 kids.

Money is something that bothers, but still could be compensated for if we had very secure jobs. But it is difficult to find a permanent job, unless you get tenure as a professor or a permanent position in the Government. The first option requires many published papers and strong networking to compete with multiple candidates. I thought in trying the second path. However, since I joined the government job, not many permanent positions were available, so people told me: get a temporary one, step there, and soon you will find a permanent position. The result is that the Government is making its biggest cuts for the last two years. My contract ends next year and no new positions are available in my department or others that would need my scientific investigation skills, even temporary ones. So basically, the probability of something appearing in the next year is low.

I have just started to look at LinkedIn with another perspective on my career. Of course, I would try something in my training, maybe in the private sector. Some companies need my skill level for clinical investigation. But I am also opening my mind to apply to any data science job, not only dealing with biological data, which is my area, but with any type of data. Now that I have achieved a comfortable salary, I don't want to move backwards; my priority now is to at least keep our current life or even improve it.

Of course, everything can change, and maybe I get a nice opportunity here to continue doing what I do. Data exploration of biological data is cool and makes me think a lot about questions that could lead to new projects, but right now I just want to keep progressing financially and preparing for my retirement, which will come in perhaps 20 - 25 years.

O mundo está em constante mudança, então por que eu não poderia mudar o rumo da minha vida? Em 2017, vim para o Canadá com o sonho de me tornar uma pesquisadora renomada. Concluí meu mestrado e doutorado no Brasil e comecei a me candidatar a vagas em todos os lugares, não apenas no Canadá. Participei de entrevistas importantes com pesquisadores seniores conhecidos mundialmente, incluindo Inglaterra, Bélgica, Nova Zelândia e Estados Unidos. Consegui um emprego em um instituto de câncer no Canadá. Meu desejo de progredir na carreira científica cresceu, mas depois de um tempo, comecei a reavaliar meus planos.

Aprendi muitas coisas durante esse caminho. A primeira é que minha conversa sobre não me importar com dinheiro era "bobagem". Com uma família e contas para pagar, você vê como o dinheiro é importante, e a ciência pode te dar uma vida, mas não uma vida muito confortável com dinheiro que você possa economizar o tempo todo. Aqui no Canadá, conseguimos pagar as contas trabalhando na área, mas ainda assim não com várias viagens ao redor do mundo com a família, especialmente quando sua família agora tem 2 filhos.

Dinheiro é algo que incomoda, mas ainda poderia ser compensado se tivéssemos empregos muito seguros. Mas é difícil encontrar um emprego permanente, a menos que você consiga a titularidade como professor ou um cargo permanente no governo. A primeira opção exige muitos artigos publicados e uma forte rede de contatos para competir com vários candidatos. Pensei em tentar o segundo caminho. No entanto, desde que entrei para o serviço público, não havia muitas vagas permanentes disponíveis, então me disseram: aceite um emprego temporário, vá se adaptando e logo você encontrará uma vaga permanente. O resultado é que o governo está fazendo os maiores cortes dos últimos dois anos. Meu contrato termina no ano que vem e não há novas vagas disponíveis no meu departamento ou em outros que precisem das minhas habilidades em pesquisa científica, nem mesmo vagas temporárias. Basicamente, a probabilidade de surgir alguma coisa no próximo ano é baixa.

Comecei a olhar o LinkedIn com uma perspectiva diferente sobre minha carreira. Claro, eu tentaria algo na minha área de formação, talvez no setor privado. Algumas empresas precisam do meu nível de habilidade para pesquisa clínica. Mas também estou aberto a me candidatar a qualquer vaga em ciência de dados, não apenas lidando com dados biológicos, que é a minha área, mas com qualquer tipo de dado. Agora que conquistei um salário confortável, não quero retroceder; Minha prioridade agora é, no mínimo, manter nossa vida atual ou até mesmo melhorá-la.

Claro, tudo pode mudar, e talvez eu tenha uma boa oportunidade aqui para continuar fazendo o que faço. A exploração de dados biológicos é fascinante e me faz pensar muito sobre questões que podem levar a novos projetos, mas agora eu só quero continuar progredindo financeiramente e me preparando para minha aposentadoria, que virá daqui a uns 20 ou 25 anos.
