I’m stopping by to share an experience I had for the first time with my youngest son, but like everything else, let’s start at the beginning: yesterday morning I was at home trying to tidy up while feeling absolutely terrible with the flu. Everyone in the house had left for their various activities—work, college, and high school—when suddenly my cell phone rang with a specific ringtone I’ve assigned to my youngest son. I checked it right away, and he told me he’d fallen while playing soccer and landed on one of his hands; my heart immediately started racing. Since we live close to the school, he told me he was coming home because his hand was hurting quite a bit. I called him back to get more details, and by the time I hung up, I called his dad at work while getting dressed. Even though I’d been feeling terrible just minutes before, my “mom on alert” mode kicked in, and that discomfort faded into the background; it was as if I’d been injected with adrenaline. By the time my son arrived, I was ready, and I also received a call from my husband saying he was on his way home. When my husband arrived, we went to an emergency health center near our home, praying to God that they would help us with this medical situation, because the hospital system in my country is a delicate matter, to put it mildly; so, in the car, I kept asking God to intervene. When we arrived, there were several people ahead of us in the emergency room, so I put my persuasive mom skills to work, got up, and sought help so they would attend to my son. We had it done and took him to the doctor, who immobilized his arm upon seeing the injury and ordered another X-ray to ensure that his work was optimal. In less than a few hours, we spent about $60 on tests, medications, and supplies for the splint they put on his arm. This made me realize that, thank God, we had the means to handle the emergency—a situation we hadn’t experienced as parents regarding a fracture with any of our children; now we have a rough idea, but on the other hand, if we hadn’t had the means to handle the emergency, I reflect and wonder, how would we have fared? Because going through this kind of medical situation, where health is a concern, is very difficult and filled with anxiety for parents and family members. On the other hand, once my son was being treated, pain-free and calm, my stress levels—which had kept me on edge—began to drop, and I started to feel my own discomfort. I had a rough night, but a peaceful one, and now I’m left with the reflection and the feeling of what a mother can do if she sees one of her children in danger or sick—the power we have to endure anything just to ensure our children’s well-being; that is undoubtedly a gift God has given us as parents. Today I woke up feeling better, and so did my son, and that’s what matters. Paso por acá para compartirles una experiencia que viví por primera vez con mi hijo menor, pero como todo, empecemos por el principio: en la mañana de ayer me encontraba en casa tratando de organizar mi casa con un malestar horrible de gripe. Todos en casa habían salido a sus diferentes actividades, trabajo, universidad y liceo; cuando de repente suena mi celular con un tono particular que le tengo asignado a mi hijo menor. De una vez revisé y me comenta que se cayó jugando futbol y que cayó sobre una de sus manos; de una vez mi corazón se aceleró. Como vivimos cerca del colegio, me dijo que se venía a casa porque le estaba doliendo bastante su mano. Lo llamé para que me contara mejor y, para cuando colgué, llamé a su papá al trabajo y al mismo tiempo me iba vistiendo y, aunque hace unos minutos me sentía terrible, se me activó el modo mamá en alerta y ese malestar pasó a segundo plano; fue como si me inyectaran adrenalina. Para cuando mi niño llegó, ya estaba lista, recibiendo también una llamada de mi esposo anunciando que venía llegando a casa. Al llegar mi esposo, nos fuimos a un centro de salud de emergencias que queda cerca de casa, esperando en Dios que nos ayudaran con esta situación de salud, porque el tema hospitalario en mi país es un tema delicado, por decirlo de alguna forma; por lo tanto, en el carro iba pidiéndole a Dios su intervención. Al momento de llegar, había varias personas por delante en la emergencia, así que activé mis dotes de mamá persuasiva y me levanté y busqué ayuda para que atendieran a mi hijo. Afortunadamente, conseguí a personas empáticas que, al ver la cara de dolor de mi hijo y la mía de angustia, me pasaron de una vez con un traumatólogo que se encontraba de guardia. Quien procedió a revisarlo y le mandó unos rayos X de la mano afectada. En el lugar no lo hacían, así que tuvimos que buscar una clínica donde le realizaran el estudio. Se lo hicimos y lo llevamos al doctor, quien le inmovilizó el brazo al ver la lesión, y le mandó otra radiografía para asegurarse de que su trabajo quedó óptimo. En menos de unas horas gastamos como 60$, entre exámenes, medicamentos y materiales para lo que le pusieron en el brazo. Esto me llevó a pensar que, gracias a Dios, tuvimos con qué afrontar la emergencia, situación que no habíamos vivido como padres en cuanto a una fractura con alguno de nuestros hijos; ahora más o menos tenemos una idea, pero, por otro lado, si no hubiéramos tenido las maneras de afrontar la emergencia, reflexiono y me pregunto, ¿cómo nos hubiera tocado? Porque vivir este tipo de situaciones médicas, donde la salud es un tema a tratar, es bien difícil y llena de angustia a padres y familiares. Por otro lado, al tener ya a mi hijo atendido, sin dolor y en calma, hizo que mis niveles de estrés, que me mantenían en alerta, bajaran y empezara a sentir mi propio malestar. Pasé una noche de perros, pero tranquila, y ahora me queda la reflexión y el sentimiento de lo que una madre puede hacer si ve a una de sus criaturas en peligro o enferma, el poder que tenemos de aguantar de todo con tal de brindarle bienestar a nuestros hijos; ese es un don que nos ha brindado Dios a los padres indudablemente.
