fter a hectic day of work and running around with her little family—her 7-year-old daughter and her husband—Claire was finally heading to bed after taking care of all her pending tasks. She soon fell into a deep sleep, the kind where not even an earthquake could wake you up; that’s what Claire thought long afterward… until she began to hear the sound of her cell phone from far away and got up with great effort to answer the call. It was her mother, whom she hadn’t heard from in a long time; when she answered, all she heard was: “Come quickly, I feel terrible.” In that instant, she felt a sharp tightness in her chest, and anxiety gripped her. As best she could, she got dressed as quickly as possible, leaving her daughter in her husband’s care, and got in her car, ready to drive the long distance that separated her from her mother, since she lived in another state, quite far away. By the time she arrived, she found her mother’s neighbors waiting for her to tell her which hospital they had taken her mother to. With no time to think, she headed to that place filled with screams, cries, and unfinished prayers. To Claire, it all felt like her worst nightmare. Upon arriving, the nurses handed her her mother’s personal belongings, as her mother had already been in the operating room for hours following sudden heart complications. Alone in that hospital hallway, Claire did nothing but cry and call other family members, until she fell silent, waiting for a response from the doctors. It felt like an eternity; she didn’t know how much time had passed, until she suddenly felt her phone ring; the screen read: “Calling, Mom.” She was perplexed until she felt a vibration coming from her mother’s purse and saw that it was her mother’s cell phone dialing her without anyone touching it... Terrified, she dropped both phones, and at that moment a doctor with a weary expression came out to tell her that her mother had fallen into a coma a few hours earlier after her condition deteriorated, and that they had done everything possible, but her mother had died just a few minutes ago... Claire couldn’t explain what had happened to her just a minute ago—how was that possible? At that moment, the insistent ringing of her phone woke her in the early morning. Pronto cayó en un sueño pesado, de esos que cuando caes no te despierta ni un terremoto; eso pensaba Claire mucho tiempo después..., hasta que desde muy lejos empezó a oír el sonido de su móvil y se levantó pesadamente a atender aquella llamada. Era su madre de quien hacía tiempo no sabía nada; al atender, solo oyó: "Ven pronto que me siento muy mal". En ese instante, sintió una fuerte opresión en el pecho y la angustia se apoderó de su pecho. Como pudo, se vistió lo más rápido que pudo, encargándole su hija a su esposo, y tomó su carro dispuesta a recorrer la larga distancia que la separaba de su madre, pues vivía en otro estado, bastante lejos de ella. Ya para cuando llegó, consiguió a los vecinos de su madre esperándola para indicarle en qué hospital habían llevado a su madre. Sin tiempo ni para analizar nada, se dirigió a aquel lugar lleno de gritos, llantos y de oraciones inconclusas. A Claire le parecía que todo aquello era su peor pesadilla. Al llegar, las enfermeras le entregaron las cosas personales de su madre, pues ya tenía horas en el quirófano, tras complicaciones repentinas con su corazón. Claire sola en aquel pasillo de hospital no hacía más que llorar y llamar a otros familiares, hasta que se quedó en silencio, esperando una respuesta de los médicos. Le parecía una eternidad, no sabía cuánto tiempo pasó, hasta que sintió que su teléfono sonaba repentinamente; en el lector decía: "Llamando, mamá" se quedó perpleja hasta que sintió una vibración proveniente de la cartera de su madre y vio que era el teléfono móvil de su madre que le estaba marcando sin que nadie lo manipulara... Muerta del miedo, soltó los dos móviles y en ese momento salió un doctor con cara de cansancio para comunicarle que su madre había caído en coma desde hace unas cuantas horas luego de descompensarse y que habían hecho todo lo posible, pero que su madre había muerto, justo hace unos minutos...Claire no podía explicar lo que le había sucedido hace justo un minuto, ¿cómo era posible aquello? En ese instante, el sonido insistente de su teléfono sonaba esa madrugada,dio gracias a Dios por despertarla de aquella angustiante pesadilla, justo a tiempo antes de que le diera a ella un ataque de pánico; pero cuando fue a ver quién le llamaba a esa hora, aun con el corazón acelerado, con gran estupor vio en el lector de identificación de la llamada que decía: "Mamá llamando"....
