Hello, dear friends at @foodiesbeehive! Welcome to my blog. Today I’m going to share my experience at the Empanada Fair, an event held in the Bebedero neighborhood of Cumaná, in the state of Sucre. Every year during Holy Week, the empanada and pepitona fair is part of the tradition of these festivities, offering fun alongside other religious activities. Although I must say that this year it was in jeopardy due to the water crisis we’ve been facing in the city: we’ve been without running water for over a month. There was criticism—how could they hold this fair with the water problem?—but bringing joy to the people of Cumaná was not an obstacle to setting aside the problems for a while.

After finishing my household chores, I made plans with a coworker who lives near Bebedero—actually, I live in that neighborhood too; it’s wonderful, don’t you think? Around 6 p.m., we met up to try some empanadas, break out of our routine, and enjoy some quality time together. The atmosphere was full of joy—a big stage with great music and entertainers, sponsors, stands selling alcoholic drinks, and, of course, the empanada stalls. I’d had breakfast a bit late, so eating empanadas was sort of like my lunch-dinner. Before I continue, let me tell you that empanadas are simply dough made from corn and wheat flour that wraps around various fillings, which can include cheese, meat, chicken, and fish, among others. They’re shaped somewhat like a leaf; it’s a simple dish that’s eaten fried but also baked.

We started walking past the empanada stands, and a very friendly woman helped us. It was pretty crowded, but we managed to find a table where we could sit comfortably while enjoying our empanadas. We placed our order and paid right away; all payment methods were available: Biopago (fingerprint payment), point-of-sale, cash, and mobile payment. The empanadas looked delicious and tempting—there were cheese, ham and cheese, pepitonas (a bivalve mollusk), shrimp, squid, beef, chicken... in short, the usual suspects as listed on the signs at the food stalls.

A few days ago, I was joking with a classmate from my dance therapy class that going to the fair and eating a cheese empanada was just too cliché, haha—it had to be something different. Besides, fish and seafood are the culinary favorites for Holy Week. I ordered two empanadas, one with shrimp and squid and one with cazón, a fish that’s eaten stewed and flaked. My friend Alejandro, on the other hand, ordered a ham and cheese one; I was surprised he didn’t order something different, but he told me he was allergic to seafood. The prices for the empanadas ranged from $1.27 to $1.70—quite affordable. I paired my order with a nice cold malt; the empanadas were a good size, the dough wasn’t crispy, it was soft, with a subtle sweetness. The filling was delicious, though in my opinion, it was a little low on salt. Alejandro told me he found the dough a little sweet; I didn’t ask him about the filling, but he mentioned that the cheese wasn’t salty—everything was just right. We also tried the sauces; I don’t usually do that because I think they overpower the flavor, but I tried just a little bit, and I liked the garlic one.

We stayed and chatted for a while, and the sponsors of Mary products (wheat flour, spaghetti, rice, and others) gave us a gift; they were going around the tables leaving a fan with the brand name on it.

To round out the meal, we went to a dessert stand; in addition to empanadas, you could also treat yourself to cakes and quesillos. It turns out that some of Alejandro’s friends were selling cakes, so we went to buy one. I got a chocolate cake with chocolate chips to go; it cost 167 pesos. We went to try it right there—it was very fluffy, fresh, and tasty.

I had a great time; the fair runs all day for a couple of days. It's close to my home, so I can go back whenever I want.

Saludos estimados amigos de @foodiesbeehive, bienvenidos a mi blog. Hoy les comparto como fue mi experiencia en la feria de las empanadas, un evento que se lleva a cabo en la Urb. Bebedero, Cumaná, estado, Sucre. Todos los años, en semana Santa, la feria de las empanadas y de las pepitonas, forman parte de la tradición en estos días de asueto para la recreación junto a otras actividades de índole religioso. Aunque, debo decir que este año estuvo en vilo, motivado a la emergencia hídrica que hemos afrontado en la ciudad, hace más de un mes no tenemos agua por tubería. Hubo críticas, como podían hacer esta feria con el problema del agua, no obstante, llevarle alegría a los cumaneses no fue un impedimento para olvidarse un poco de los problemas.

Después de hacer mis quehaceres de ama de casa, me puse de acuerdo con un compañero de trabajo que vive cerca de Bebedero, de hecho, yo vivo en ese vecindario, una maravilla, no les parece?. A eso de las 6 pm nos encontramos para degustar las empanadas, salir de la rutina y compartir un rato agradable. El ambiente estaba cargado de alegría, una gran tarima con buena música y animadores, patrocinadores, kioskos de bebidas alcohólicas, y no podían faltar, los puestos de empanadas. Yo había desayunado algo tarde, así que comer empanadas fue algo así como mi almuerzo-cena. Antes de continuar, te cuento que las empanadas no son más que una masa hecha con harina de maíz y trigo que envuelve rellenos variados, que pueden ser, queso, carne, pollo y pescados, entre otros. Quedan algo así como con forma de una hoja, es un plato sencillo que se come frito pero también horneado

Comenzamos a caminar entre los puestos de empanadas y una señora muy amable nos atendió. Había bastante gente, pero conseguimos una mesa donde sentarnos para estar cómodos mientras disfrutamos de las empanadas. Hicimos nuestro pedido y enseguida pagamos, estaban disponibles todos los métodos, biopago (pago con huella digital), punto de venta, efectivo y pago móvil. Las empanadas se veían deliciosas y provocativas, había de queso, jamón con queso, pepitonas (un molusco bivalvo), camarones, calamares, carne, pollo, en fin, era lo más común al leer los letreros en los puestos de comida.

Hace días bromeaba con una compañera de la clase de bailoterapia, que ir a la feria y comer una empanada de queso, era una grosería, jeje, tenía que ser algo distinto. Además, el pescado y los frutos de mar, son la predilección culinaria para la semana mayor. Pedí dos empanadas, una de camarones con calamar y una de cazón, un pescado que se come guisado y desmenuzado. Por su parte, mi amigo Alejandro pidió una de jamón y queso, me sorprendió que no pidiera algo diferente, pero me dijo que era alérgico a los mariscos. Los precios de las empanadas oscilaban entre 1,27$ y 1,70$, bastante asequibles. Acompañé mi pedido con una malta bien fría, las empanadas tenían buen tamaño, la masa no estaba tostada, estaba suave, con su respectivo toque dulce, muy sutil. El guiso estaba delicioso, solo que a mi parecer, estaba un poco bajo de sal. Alejandro me dijo que encontró la masa un poco dulce, no le pregunté por el relleno, pero me comentó que el queso no estaba salado, estaba todo en su punto. También probamos las salsas, no suelo hacerlo porque pienso que se llevan todo el sabor, sin embargo, probé solo un poco, me gustó la de ajo.
