Hello, fans of good music. As is customary every Tuesday on my blog (though it probably won’t be Tuesday by the time I manage to post this), today I’d like to talk to you about three playlists of songs that shaped a good part of my childhood, adolescence, and youth. Thanks to @ablaze for giving us the chance to share our love of good music on that special Three Tunes Tuesday. It was especially during my teenage years that I finally came to understand what Rock music really is, and among the many bands I listened to, Oasis was one of the most prominent and talked-about by the people who introduced me to the genre. Oasis is one of those bands that kept the Rock genre alive throughout the dawn of the new millennium and the constant changes that occurred in the decades that followed. Today, they are among the most talked-about and recognized British bands in the UK and around the world due to the enormous influence they have achieved. Formed by brothers Noel and Liam Gallagher, along with other members, Oasis is best known for playing Alternative Rock, though they have also had a significant influence on the Britpop subgenre.

Como ya es costumbre cada martes en mi blog (aunque seguramente ya no sea martes cuando consiga publicar esto), hoy toca hablarles de tres selecciones de canciones que marcaron una buena parte de mi infancia, adolescencia y juventud. Gracias a @ablaze por darnos la oportunidad de compartir nuestros gustos por la buena música en ese especial Three Tunes Tuesday. Fue especialmente en mi adolescencia cuando fue el momento exacto en el que llegué a reconocer qué es el Rock y, entre tantas bandas que llegué a escuchar, estuvo Oasis entre las principales y las más sonadas por aquellos que me enseñaron sobre éste género. Oasis es de esas bandas que mantuvieron el género del Rock vivo durante toda la venida del nuevo milenio y los constantes cambios que ocurrieron en décadas posteriores. Actualmente es de las bandas británicas más sonadas y reconocidas del Reino Unido y el mundo debido a la enorme influencia que han conseguido. Conformado por los hermanos Noel y Liam Gallagher, entre otros miembros más, Oasis es más conocido por tocar Rock Alternativo, aunque también ha influido mucho en el subgénero Britpop.

Let’s start with one of the most popular singles by the British band Oasis. “Stand by Me” is one of those songs that, according to many, brought an entire era back to life thanks to its rhythm—a somewhat slow and quite emotional Britpop track for its time. It appears on the band’s third album, Be Here Now (1997), as its second single. It was written by Noel Gallagher himself and speaks of the loneliness and uncertainty of being alone while longing for a little company. “Stand by Me” was one of the first Oasis singles I heard when I was just 12 or 14 years old. Obviously, back then I had no idea what on earth these songs were about since I only listened to them because they sounded so good on my old rocker friend’s stereo. One of the things I love most about this song in particular is the way it starts with the sound of that distorted electric guitar in the background. Even so, I feel like it’s a very mellow song, typical of the style and genre this British band came to be known for. Nowadays, as I look back on the old playlist from when I was a teenager, I’m starting to understand the lyrics better. Lines like “Don’t you know the cold and wind and rain don’t know?” and “They only seem to come and go away” point to a sense of uncertainty that everyone feels about what will happen next. They mention that the cold, the wind, and the rain don’t know what will happen, and yet they come and go without any trouble. The phrase repeated often in the chorus, “Stand by me, nobody knows the way it’s gonna be”, is a declaration of companionship in times of loneliness. I’ve experienced this loneliness for a long time, and while I’ve been feeling better this way lately, sometimes it’s necessary to have some company.

Empecemos con uno de los sencillos más populares de la banda británica, Oasis. Stand by Me es de esas canciones que, según muchos, revivieron toda una época debido a su ritmo, siendo un Britpop un tanto lento y bastante emotivo para la época. Forma parte del tercer álbum de la banda titulado “Be Here Now” (1997) como su segundo sencillo. Fue escrita por el mismo Noel Gallagher y habla de la soledad y de la incertidumbre de quedarse solo mientras deseas un poco de compañía. Stand by Me es de los primeros sencillos que escuché de Oasis cuando apenas tenía 12 y 14 años de edad. Obviamente, en esa época no tenía ni idea de qué rayos hablaban estas canciones ya que solamente las escuchaba por lo bien que sonaban en el equipo de mi viejo amigo, el rockero. Una de las cosas que más me encantan de esta canción en particular es la forma en la que empieza con el sonido de esa guitarra eléctrica toda distorsionada de fondo. Aún así, siento que es una canción muy tranquila y típica del estilo y género del cual llegó a identificarse esta banda británica. Actualmente, mientras voy recordando la vieja lista de canciones de cuando era adolescente, es que llego a entender mejor su letra. Frases como “Don't you know the cold and wind and rain don't know?” y “They only seems to come and go away” señalan una sensación de incertidumbre que todo el mundo tiene por lo que sucederá después. Mencionan tanto el frío como el viento y la lluvia no saben qué sucederá y, aún así, van y vienen sin dificultad alguna. Let’s talk now about the song that completely defined one of the “best” periods of my adolescence. I’m talking about the British band’s most famous single and the song that introduced me to them when I was just a kid. “Wonderwall” is the fourth single from Oasis’s second studio album, titled “(What’s the Story) Morning Glory?” (1995). With a distinct rhythm and style, “Wonderwall” was also written by the great Noel Gallagher. The song speaks to the early stages of falling in love, as well as the mix of euphoria and agony that comes with the moment. Ever since I first heard it, “Wonderwall” has been one of the most-played songs on my old Playlist from when I was a teenager. Back then, I spent my time daydreaming about scenarios I imagined with friends and acquaintances. But what was most on my mind was the idea of who to dedicate this song to, since—innocently—I thought that by doing so I could confess my feelings to that “special someone”. Although I did end up dedicating this song on several occasions, my bad luck in love made me rethink my feelings about it. “Wonderwall” has become an anthem for love, and for good reason. Its lyrics reveal a person asking their partner to take action and not lose faith, despite life’s adversities. Lines like “Today is gonna be the day, that they’re gonna throw it back to you” or “Backbeat, the word was on the street, that the fire in your heart is out” reflect the struggle everyone faces against criticism and the problems that bring us down. The song continues, “I don’t believe that anybody feels the way I do, about you now.” It also declares: “Because maybe you’re gonna be the one that saves me, and after all, you’re my Wonderwall.”

Hablemos ahora de la canción que definió por completo una de las “mejores” épocas de mi adolescencia. Estoy hablando del sencillo más reconocido de la banda británica y la canción que me hizo conocerlos cuando apenas tenía edad. Wonderwall es el cuarto sencillo del segundo álbum de estudio de Oasis titulado “(What’s the Story) Morning Glory?” (1995). Con un ritmo y estilo bastante definido, Wonderwall también fue compuesta por el gran Noel Gallagher. We wrap up with another huge hit, one of Oasis’s best-known singles—especially for those of my generation who grew up listening to it from a young age without even realizing it. It’s a beautiful song, both for its lyrics and its slow, emotional, and nostalgic rhythm and melody, which brings back memories of good times. "Stop Crying Your Heart Out" is the second single from their fourth album, Heavenly Chemistry (2002). The song, once again, was also written by the great Noel Gallagher. Its lyrics are interpreted as a message of hope and motivation for those going through difficult times in their lives. Ever since I discovered Oasis in my teens, I haven’t stopped listening to these singles that my old friends shared with me. But something this particular song had that the others didn’t is its similarity to the music that plays at the end of the movie The Butterfly Effect (2004). This is because, obviously, it’s the same song, which had a huge impact on me—especially at the time—due to the movie’s ending. I won’t talk about that, but rather about what this combination of the ending and the Oasis song in the background meant to me. The scene literally depicts the song’s message, with someone walking forward without stopping. Lines like “Cause all of the stars are fading away”, “Just try not to worry, you’ll see them some day”, “Take what you need, and be on your way”, “And stop crying your heart out”—these are the ones we hear in the chorus of this song, and they’re perfect for describing what it conveys to us. Even though everything looks dark, bleak, and hopeless, there’s always the option to keep moving forward and stop crying so much in life. The way the song begins, conveying a confident assurance that everything will soon come to an end, is encouraging because even difficult times eventually come to an end.

Finalizamos con otro gran éxito, otro de los sencillos más conocidos de Oasis, sobre todo los que son de mi generación y crecimos escuchándola desde pequeños sin siquiera darnos cuenta. Una canción hermosa tanto por su letra como por su ritmo y melodía lenta, emotiva y nostálgica que nos hace revivir buenos tiempos. Stop Crying Your Heart Out es el segundo sencillo de su cuarto álbum titulado Heathen Chemistry (2002). La canción, una vez más, fue escrita también por el gran Noel Gallagher. Su letra es interpretada como un mensaje de esperanza y motivación para aquellos que pasan por momentos difíciles en sus vidas.
