Deep Thoughts
I used to write a lot. In 2004 I made a conscious effort to write one page in a journal every day. It looked exactly like this:
If I missed a day, I would go back and fill in the missing page as best I could remember from the day in question. Thoughts, feelings, introspection, mundane details. . . I even pasted in photos and mementos from my daily life and travels. It did this for 2 solid years and ended up with a couple of handsome and well-worn tomes of my life.
And then I burned them.
A reassessment of my life prompted me to look through the pages of these journals, and I realized that there was excessive personal detail and counterproductive negativity. If I read the words, I would be self-critical. If someone else read the words, they would be uncomfortable and I would be embarrassed. It didn't make sense for such a thing to exist if it served no positive purpose whatsoever. So I destroyed it.
Well, it wasn't all negative. . . my penmanship improved dramatically!
When I started journaling again this year, I made a conscious decision to put the words out for all the world to see. This serves two purposes:
- I find a voice that is both honest and positive.
- Others can derive some benefit from my experiences.
In the future I can look back on these words and assess the journey of my life without dwelling negatively on the past. A little perspective goes a long way :)
Meat Thoughts
My wife says my food photography leaves much to be desired, so I've been working on my angles and lighting a bit. First things first. . . today I smoked a 3lb boneless chuck on the BGE at 250 for 5 hours + 1.5 hours of rest (basically followed this recipe). Salted and sitting at room temp:
After the first turn on the grill during the initial smoke:
After the full cook in foil:
Pulled and ready to eat:
My wife will be enjoying this while I'm off on SF for the next couple days, looking forward to another exciting trip!
