"When wisdom entereth into thine heart, and knowledge is pleasant unto thy soul; discretion shall preserve thee, understanding shall keep thee."
Proverbs Chapter 14
The simple believeth every word: but the prudent man looketh well to his going.
A wise man feareth, and departeth from evil: but the fool rageth, and is confident.
He that is soon angry dealeth foolishly: and a man of wicked devices is hated.
The simple inherit folly: but the prudent are crowned with knowledge. (15 - 18)
He that despiseth his neighbour sinneth: but he that hath mercy on the poor, happy is he. 21
He that is slow to wrath is of great understanding: but he that is hasty of spirit exalteth folly.
A sound heart is the life of the flesh: but envy the rottenness of the bones.
He that oppresseth the poor reproacheth his Maker: but he that honoureth him hath mercy on the poor. (29 - 31)
Wisdom resteth in the heart of him that hath understanding: but that which is in the midst of fools is made known.
Righteousness exalteth a nation: but sin is a reproach to any people. (33 - 34)
Proverbs Chapter 17
A merry heart doeth good like a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones. 22
Even a fool, when he holdeth his peace, is counted wise: and he that shutteth his lips is esteemed a man of understanding. 28
Proverbs Chapter 29
The righteous considereth the cause of the poor: but the wicked regardeth not to know it.
Scornful men bring a city into a snare: but wise men turn away wrath.
If a wise man contendeth with a foolish man, whether he rage or laugh, there is no rest.
The bloodthirsty hate the upright: but the just seek his soul.
A fool uttereth all his mind: but a wise man keepeth it in till afterwards. (7 - 11)
Seest thou a man that is hasty in his words? there is more hope of a fool than of him. 20
A man's pride shall bring him low: but honour shall uphold the humble in spirit. 23
Proverbs a collection of a collection of Jewish Wisdom
In modern slang we could think of them as spiritual life hacks which help someone to lead a happy, successful, and meaningful life. There's an emphasis on a healthy respect for God, and an embrace of wisdom. Below is a four minute video clip which gives an excellent overview of the Book of Proverbs. One especially salient point they make is that the word which we translate as “wisdom” in English, is not exactly what the Book of Proverbs teaches -- it mans more than that in Hebrew. It describes a force that permeates the universe and into which human can tap. It's a force that allows one to discern an optimal or beneficial course of action, so in many ways that indeed equates to wisdom, but it also manifests itself in the craftsmanship of an artisan, architect, or artist. In any case, this short clip is well worth watching.
