Ever since the first time I tried Venison I quickly became a big fan of it. Sometimes I get sausage, other time small cuts of it. But this was my first large serving of Deer I received. And I am really looking forward to trying it. Being wild game meat it has a unique flavor to it. Unlike farm raised animals, the Deer that was killed for this meat ate hundreds of different kinds of plants and because of that the meat is much more high quality in my opinion. Eating animals from the forest taste much better than farm raised, due to the diversity of their diet. And usually what they eat is higher quality than mass produced farm feed.
Really looking forward to doing some cooking posts on Hive using this meat. It could last us up to a few months, really curious how long we will be eating it all. Twenty pounds of Deer meat is a little less than half of a harvest of it. My friend took the rest and has already eaten alot of it.
My friend has had a very successful hunting season, nearly filling his tag limit. He got these Deer with his bow. So I was given some of the meat he harvested. He brought over a bag of it, each piece wrapped in foil and one of them vacuum sealed. It should be fine wrapped like this as long as no air gets in and causes freezer burn.
With a trash bag full of deer meat he laid it on my table, its a little more than 20 pounds if you include the bones in the weight. I am really thankful I have a friend that lets me have some of his harvest.
A cut of shawarma, its mostly the deer neck. It will make for a good soup. Recommended that you first sear it before putting it in for the soup so its fully cooked when all done.
Back straps, those can be made into a nice Deer steak. Cooked and then cut into pieces for a nice meal.
You can see how big these pieces are, each weighing a good five pounds or more.
Got some Deer butt too, this will make a nice Deer jerky. We made some a few weeks ago and did a post on it as a joint effort between and myself. Will do another post when we make some jerky from this meat.
Lastly a leg of Deer, has alot of bone in it so probably best for a stew. So I have two kinds of meat I can use when I want to make a stew. Good eating for those cold weather days.
Loading up my freezer it feels good to have a bunch of meat. Especially game meat, as what the animal eats has a big impact on the meat. So eating some local Georgia Deer is the best. Hah we can see my big bag of Blueberries in the freezer as well, still have bunch from last years harvest. We also have a little peach butter left, should probably eat that up as I should have more soon.
