Have you ever wondered what people think of you when they meet you? Although it is said that it is not correct to judge a person before treating them, there is always a first impression when they meet a stranger.
According to psychologist Leslie Zebrowitz of Brandeis University in Massachusetts, the first thing a person notices when they meet you is not about the size of your nose or the shape of your eyes, but about what your face says about you.
Multiple investigations have shown that facial characteristics influence the perception of a person before knowing it. Zebrowitz's research, published in the journal Current Direction in Psychological Science, was based on the way in which the human brain records the first impression of a new person. Based on the brain reaction he highlighted four types of faces:
Babyface or baby face
It refers to those people with large eyes, rounded faces and large forehead. We may treat a person with babyface more kindly.
Family face
People often feel comfortable with what they know, so seeing a face that looks familiar can facilitate this first moment.
Athletic or thin face
There are a number of physical attributes that are recognized as attractive and that in Western culture are often related to a healthy person and caring for your body.
Emotional expression
Reading the facial expression is an activity that we do at all times when communicating, understanding and feeling empathy for what the other is showing with their gestures favors a good first impression.
Zebrowitz's research, like that of many authors, shows that most people create a judgment when they meet a new person, although this often changes when the person changes from being a stranger to being an acquaintance.
