Mental Health in the workplace: Leave the toxicity even with paycut.
Actually, this is not something that I am preaching, but actually happened in reality in our workplace. I will also like to make clear all this toxicity is not due to the company policies, infact company policies are too good, Company under fortune 100 company based in US, having a history of more than 50 years, it is under 5 in IT industry in world and recently it owner become the world no. 1 richest person briefly, all fueled by its commitment to AI. This is one of the dream companies for many, but as you already know, most of the time employees leave due to their managers, not due to their concerns with employer policies.
In India, where getting a job is becoming hard, especially after post covid period. In last 3 years, companies has slashed more IT positions then it created. This is confirmed in the annual report of many companies where they officially reported a reduction in workforce. Also , I guess this might be the common in all over the world that anyone rarely leave the current job to pick up a low-paying job voluntarily.
With manager demand keeping getting unjust and sometimes it was unable to get matched by putting up long hours and personal rebuke becoming too much for the human errors and no action taken to mitigate those human error. So much constant pressure in work actually make work non enjoyable and causes more errors when someone try to rush it up ,so that one can save long working hours. Unfortunately, it started becoming a vicious cycle unless someone perform a blameless postmortem and starts relooking from end to end instead of creating further meaningless processes.
Anyway, I am also in favour of leaving the toxic workplace and for the ease of taking decision to leave, I guess . a person always take care of below points.
Few of the lessons I learned from it.
1. Health is of utmost importance.
Do not put the money ahead of health. If you are healthy and sound, you can still create wealth even after retirement age. Anyways healthcare is currently expensive in almost all part of the work that might leave you the medically broke.
2. Avoid disclosing salary to relatives.
I think this is also important in the countries and societies where family bonds are closely knitted and people meet their relatives very frequently. Sometimes people avoid taking paycut due to the societal pressure, as it shows a negative trend in income and is attributed to one's capability and efficiency. This hidden pressure sometime make it hard to leave from toxic position as soon as possible.
3. Save and invest always.
With all these job cuts , it become evident that your jobs is not secure. Trend is now shifted from "I will work" to "Will I have work". Since uou do not know that how much you can earn in future so it become important to save and invest when you have income. Do not delay this on the basis of your future income. having stable background will also enable you to leave toxic environment early.
