Wild Onions
A small harvest of ramps!!! I only took one leaf per plant... and just the leaf, you see.. NO BULBS, and that's because the way to harvest wild leaks in a sustainable way is to make sure not to take more than just the one leaf from one mature plant. They're so strong in flavor as is, you really don't need the bulbs anyway, SO LET THEM GROW.
These little delicious wilds take up to 7 years to reach maturity. That's why you should harvest sustainably. I have been learning anything I can on foraging for the last three years and I'm glad I started when I did... it takes a while to find your wild food spots! Though thanks to a good friend for sharing this ramps spot... it's a treasure of a present!!!!
Last year we ate so much wild food, between that and our garden it made up a good quarter of our food. That's quite a few trips to the grocery store avoided!
I will admit a lot of that food came from hunting mushrooms but happily it was right on our property!!!!
This time I did not go foraging with the new Pup, these plants are far too fragile!!!! I know it's sad but what're ya gonna do, it is how it is... I can however give you a hint:
Ramps, Wild Leeks, Wild Onions... or what ever other names these delicious beauties go by, if you can find the place where the skunk cabbages meet the trout lilies, you may be in for a feast!
